Rinaldo

Quote from: torut on January 03, 2016, 03:31:16 PMI found this during random sampling. I had no idea about the artist, but the first track immediately grabbed me.

Deep Thoughts by Giant Claw (Orange Milk Records, 2015)

Whoa, The Residents are into vaporwave now? Wicked fun!

Also listening to the new Bowie and guess I've expected too much. Aside from what's been already released, Girl Loves Me is great but the two last songs sound entirely dismissable.

Sue has really grown on me, though. Good stuff.

I think that is with Maria Schneider and her big band. Very good. I like Schneider's music a lot.

Don't have much time to invest in music recently but this has caught my attention and is surprisingly good: Amanda Palmer's string quartet (!) tribute to Bowie.

Strung Out In Heaven: A Bowie String Quartet Tribute

Really enjoyed it, especially Blackstar – shows how super strong the original is. One of Bowie's all-time greats, IMO.

I wasn't a Savages fan but their new record made me a convert.

In other 'news', there's a new John Congleton (ex-pAper chAse) record coming on April 1st, which I've had the privilege of hearing and it's a m a z i n g. How he manages to blend his patented quirky noise-rock with catchy singalongs, I don't know.. but I'll spam this thread when the album's out, that's for sure. The single's here. Just let go, just let go, just let go..

I too enjoyed this album very much.

Recently, I listened to some string quartets which I am not sure are classical or non-classical.

Dave Soldier: In Four Color: Music for String Quartet by PUBLIQuartet & Soldier String Quartet

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/davesoldier8
The three string quartets may be regarded as classical works (no. 3 is based on Schoenberg's quartet no. 2), but most of the rest sound quite like blues or rock.

The low end string quartet is an interesting group, consisiting of violin, guitar, cello and bass.

Good stuff – and I'll follow with another classical / popular crossover, this time an arrangement (and a very good one, IMO) of Bowie's Warszawa, done as a tribute by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra.

Sophia have a new album out:

Not my cup of tea but I know people who worship this band.

Any thoughts on the new Eno album, you crazy diamonds still checking out this thread now and then?

Not really adventurous, but very enjoyable, in a 'best-of-Eno' sense. Especially the longer tracks.

Speaking of enjoyable, is PJ Harvey's The Hope Six Demolition Project brilliant or what?!

Instant love.

Statistics tell me you're probably not a fan of David Bowie's Lodger (I, on the other hand, rank it among his finest) but nevermind, there's this band called Shearwater and they might make a Lodger convert out of you – they did the whole thing live and it's fabulous!

No small feat, given Lodger's ultimate quirkiness..

Autechre are back, BIG TIME: Autechre release five-part album, Elseq 1-5

Thanks for reporting this album Rinaldo - I will certainly look into getting a copy when it is released on CD!

Just heard about Let's Eat Grandma, a teenage duo in the vein of CocoRosie.

Quirky, fun!

New Swans alert, The Glowing Man is OUT.

A tiny excerpt from the almost half hour long title track:

Gonna see them in November, my third time. It's an experience like no other.

Sunday guitars! First a fabulous heartbreaker from Mitski, to be played at maximum volume.

Same thing could be said about Manon meurt, a young Czech band following in the steps of My Bloody Valentine. I've posted about them a year ago and seeing them live last Wednesday turned me into a fan. Great sound, amazing dynamics. Didn't expect them to be this good.

And speaking of good, here's the best current Czech band (according to me, of course), Vložte Kočku ("Insert the Cat"). Don't fear the language, the lyrics are ultra surreal. To be played at maximum resolution!

Austin Wintory continues to be the most inspired guy working in video game music right now. His soundtrack for the underwater adventure ABZÛ isn't showy but there are moments of utter brilliance and string parts that would make RVW proud.

All work and no play makes me forget my own thread but I'll just leave this here in case someone, presumably living under a rock, might've missed it:
