Quote from: Iota on January 27, 2026, 12:03:00 PMWell episode 3 is something of a step up ..

Talk about night and day, the last three episodes left the first three in the dust! And personally I've never seen a tv series ending like that, blimey!  :o

Quote from: Iota on January 27, 2026, 07:28:49 AMI too am struggling to get into the new season of The Night Manager. The first was so good, full of edge-of-the-seat menace and threat throughout, with Hugh Laurie a terrifying, but somehow believable, villain. As a point of contrast I'm finding Diego Calva's bad guy pretty nothing-y, in fact I'm finding most of it so really. I'll watch another episode or two to see how it goes.

Wait, there's a new season?  I thought it was an adaptation of the LeCarre novel.  I started watching the series, and then switched to the novel, and never came back to the series.

Yes indeed, a new season. Season 1 was based on the novel, Season 2 is a new story but involving many of the same characters. A third season is also in the pipeline.

And while I'm here .. SPOILER ALERT .. Of no interest to anybody but me, but as far as last night's ending of season 2 goes, I woke up this morning with a realisation in my head that made me think I had been tricked into believing something that may not actually have happened.

The Hugh Laurie character resurrection not as outrageous as Bobby Ewing in Dallas, but stretched credibility somewhat. However, the series would not be the same without him.

I was always a little bit suspicious of that confirmation of his death in the opening episode, so when he reappears in Episode 3, I wasn't 'that' surprised. I was much more taken aback by events in the closing scene of the whole Season!

Watching and perhaps watching again some of the Michael Parkinson shows.  What a great show and such an amazing host.

Really enjoying Everybody Loves Raymond at bedtime and Blue Bloods in the early evening.

Love Robert's character. Brad was fun in 'Til Death as well.

Just dying laughing watching Parky and Billy Connolly (with Tom Cruise).  One of my favorite episodes was with the Scottish host Craig Ferguson (The Late Late Show).  I first ran across Connolly in a t.v. show that he did in the U.S. playing a teacher in a classroom.  Impressed by his acting in "Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown".  Great movie.

What's the name of his podcast?  And does he have a current talk show?  I'd love to watch it.

He was a guest on a few podcasts (I think Smartless and one or two others), I didn't think he had one of his own, but Google yielded this: https://open.spotify.com/show/1gD52euTghroa5ROD3JaeB

As for talk show, I just meant his old talk show that you mentioned above.

I think that you might enjoy this episode.  Billy Connolly was the guest on the Late Late Show [He was on it a number of times.].  I believe that this is one which left me in stitches.  :)

I love how Parky is happy to sit back at times and let his guests just run with it and take over the show (in the above clip).

Decided to give the much-panned On This Day... 1776 a shot.  The reason is because Darren Aronofsky helms it.  It's AI slop, to be sure, but it's upgraded slop.  One must assume that this type of content will continue to improve, for good and ill.  For proper history, books are still the way to go.  That written, I'll probably sample a couple more webisodes.  I suspect a doozy is coming in July.

Absolutely one of the best series of the last decades: Anson Mount as a former Confederate soldier trying to escape the ghosts of the Civil War by joining the construction team for the Union Pacific Transcontinental Railroad, Colm Meaney as the corrupt and relentless owner of the Union Pacific, and a host of great character actors in a "gritty" production, in which the Old West is as ragged and dirty as one might suspect.

Mud is everywhere and the characters - most of them for most of the time - seem desperately in need of Dr. Sudsy's  Bath House -  25 ¢.

Broadcast from 2011-2016: hard to believe it has been 10 years since it ended.

Fun fact: Anson Mount went on to join a Star Trek series, Colm Meaney had been on two Star Trek shows in the 1980's and 1990's.

Been hopping around various videos from local-ish geologist Nick Zentner.  A few years back, a couple of his videos helped compel me to make a special trip to the Scablands of Washington to take in the vistas and local sites.  Probably the most famous landmark associated with the region is Grand Coulee Dam, which is still the largest power station in the US, and it was critical to the Manhattan Project.  Dry Falls is also noteworthy since geologists reckon it was the highest flow waterfall in the history of the earth during the Missoula Floods.  He covers very specific sites and geology across many videos, some of which aired on PBS.  Some of his geology lectures garner 100K+ views, which is impressive for the topics.  Some of the videos I've watched recently make me think I should hit the eastern-most source of the Columbia River flood basalts in Idaho and follow them to the Pacific.

Midway in the first season of Upstairs, Downstairs there is a horrific death that disturbed me. Normally I react pretty much the same way I imagine others do. I'd forgotten the episode completely.

I'm watching a French police show of unsurpassed mediocrity because Someone who lived in Paris for a year in '67 likes the scenery near the Swiss border and is more tolerant of obnoxiousity than I am.
