Quote from: krummholz on May 16, 2026, 06:34:12 AMYou must have missed the part where Gustavo Fring's lover or partner was executed casually by the cartel boss. It might not have been stated explicitly that they were lovers, but it was either shown in images or strongly implied.

Ah yes, Don Gustavo liked nerds. Maybe he was hoping to hook up with Walter, steal him from Jesse.

Just got to the bit where Darlene has adopted Zeke in Ozark. And the cartel has killed Cade (good riddance!)

Quote from: JBS on May 16, 2026, 06:30:25 AMExcept redneck no longer implies being poor, and hillbilly can be a non-insulting term (Dolly Parton is a hillbilly, after all). They are now much more terms designating culture than economic status (although they were at one point confined to economic status). Cracker is a related term, referring to rural whites from Florida and Georgia.

When in doubt, "white trash" is a useful phrase. Since it is definitely an insult and implies lack of resources.

I guess "white trash" is the same as "trailer trash"

Never heard of crackers before.

In Ozark Darlene actually kills Del because he calls her a redneck. And Jacob tells a story (parable) which relies on the distinction between rednecks and hillbillies just before Darlene kills Bobby.

Quote from: Todd on May 16, 2026, 06:40:05 AMCommon usage still implies being poor, and even more importantly, uneducated and hence uncultured.  I know people who openly embrace the terms.  One former coworker was an out loud and proud hillbilly from West Virginia.

"White Trash" is indeed always meant to be insulting, though it fails in that respect.  Some people embrace the designation.  The term is definitely more useful because it is more universal.  It can be used to describe people not only from the US, but also other former European colonies and from Europe itself.

When I worked in California I bought this from a bokshop in Santa Cruz, I still have it though I've only ever cooked one thing from it - a sandwich with potato chips and mayo. Some of the ingredients are hard to get here.

Doesn't that have a recipe for Chex mix prepared with bacon grease?  That would be some good eatin'.

The world is more cosmopolitan now, and as such the phrase "struggle meal" is more appropriate today.

Currently, Spy/Master which I discovered because of Pine Gap:

"As soon as a coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs."

Kalevala

Watched some excerpts from Saturday Night Live today; fun to watch.  Will Farrell and Paul McCartney were the host and musical guest respectively.

I remembered hearing/reading that there was a new SNL edition in London.  I watched a couple of skits from it; one about 10 Downing Street being up for sale [I caught some of the political references but not others] and one about Peter Pan visiting Wendy after 40 years.  :)

How are you folks in the UK enjoying it?

Philo, have you seen Will Trent? It's excellent. Great sense of humor, interesting cases and complex, likable characters. The lead is especially great. I am enjoying the 4th season tonight. It has already been renewed for a 5th season.

I've not even heard of it, but now that I have - I will put it on my list - I love the premise of the show. :)

Will Trent is a good show; I've caught some of the episodes.

I'm currently catching some of the old Friends episodes [some watched before and some missed].  I had forgotten how much they made me laugh and were very touching at times too.  Still good after all of these years.

I bought the series on Prime in 2019. This was the only way I could get English subs and HD.

Fallout: Season 2 (2026)
Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan
Leslie Uggams, Macaulay Culkin

Good Omens: Season 3 (2026)
Michael Sheen, David Tennant

The final season of Good Omens is a single 90-minute episode, I assume due to the Neil Gaiman allegations. An unnecessary send-off, but if you like the characters, it contains the same silliness.

I didn't mind the continuing tales of Fallout, although the show has certainly become a Goggins-centered vehicle. I expect if one played the video games, there were nods galore to catch, ones I missed out of sheer ignorance about such matters.
