What are your top 5 favorite Nielsen works? Again, as with the Sibelius poll, you can only choose one symphony but for further difficulty only one concerto as well. Let's see those lists!

Here are my picks (in no particular order):

Symphony No. 5
Flute Concerto
Wind Quintet
An Imaginary Trip to the Faroes
Pan and Syrinx

springrite

Wind Quintet
Symphony #3
Symphony #5
Violin Concerto
Clarinet Concerto
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

You can only choose one symphony, Paul. I've got to make this a bit more challenging for you guys. ;)

Sounds like an excellent rule, so, now only one concerto as well. 8)

nor in competing for the favor of wayward friends.

Very nice list, Karl. I love Søvnen and very well could have included in my own list.

Helios
Saga Drom
Pan and Syrinx

Symphony No.3
Violin Concerto
Maskarade
Helios Overture
Fynsk Forår

Wind Quintet because, let's just get that out of the way.

Symphony No. 6 needs more love.

I don't know if I'm the only person here to love the piano works, or even to know them at all. But: Chaconne (op. 32) and Suite (op. 45).

Finally the superb Violin Sonata No. 2, Op. 35

with the Clarinet Concerto waiting in the wings.

You have remember this is GMG, so we've got to make it difficult to choose favorite works, which, I hope, in turn, encourages members to dig more into a composer's oeuvre and find some gems. It didn't take long for some of us to post lists, but for the newcomer or someone unfamiliar with a lot of Nielsen's work, this would hopefully inspire them to take a second look at his music.

I was rather underwhelmed by one disc with string quartets (the wind quintet is great, of course), so I never looked further into the chamber (or piano) music. Which recordings are recommended for the violin sonatas and piano music?
