Bump.  Any further experiences with ArkivCDs that anyone would like to share?  I've never bought one, so I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. :)

I keep buying them; have about 30 now and zero problems.

I love Arkiv's program!  I've bought a lot of music from them (Handel's Fireworks Music & Concerti due Cori by Tafelmusik, Norrington's work with Brahms to name a few) with no problems whatsoever.  The discs arrive in brand new, factory sealed condition, as if they were originals.  I can recommend Arkiv whole-heartedly!

P.S. A little trick for you: if you're only ordering one disc order it through Amazon; there you'll only have to pay $3 for shipping, whereas through the Archiv site it's $6.  If you're ordering in bulk go through the Arkiv site or Amazon will charge $3 for every single album.  Yes, I'm cheap. ;)

I stopped buying from Arkiv after it started hitting me with sale tax in addition to S&H.

I thank you for your comments.  :)

Arkiv must have heard from your State of residence.  The Eastern States have a reputation for being particularly money-hungry.

Well, looks like the consensus is:  It's a no-brainer.  Go for it if necessary!

Thanks everyone. :)

Thanks for the info rubio.

I was aware of Arkivmusic's CDR's, but I didn't know they had done this one. However, I don't consider these to be legitimate copies.

Until this gets a proper reissue, or until I can find near mint used LP or oop CD copies at a decent price, I'll stick with my very good sounding .50 cent cassette tapes. ;D

These ARE legitimate copies. ArkivMusic has the full authorization from all record companies who participate.

But that's just it: sometimes copies of rare material can't be found or are sold at inflated prices on the aftermarket. Arkiv's service is a boon for the hardcore classical collector.

Hello,

I understand your viewpoint, and I myself have broken down in the past and bought one of these Archivmusic CDR's, when I couldn't find an original.

I've found that some of these CDR's can't even withstand normal usage. The CDR I bought mysteriously stopped playing correctly in my CD player after awhile, even though I couldn't see any noticeable defects on the disc that might cause it to skip. I've never had this happen to any legitimate CD's I've bought.

Needless to say, first impressions last a long time, and I'm reluctant to shell out another 15 bucks for another one.

I have never bought any of these CDR's from ArkivMusic, though I do wonder what kind of CD artwork and libretto you receive as part of the purchase.  UniversalMusic that licensed these OOP works to ArkivMusic certainly has no obligations to provide the original CD artwork and libretto to ArkivMusic already printed as part of the licensing agreement ...

The artwork and librettos leave much to be desired from my experience. The CDR I bought had a cheap color Xerox copy of the original cover booklet, which was two pages and completely blank in the middle.

It did sound pretty good however, as long as it lasted!

I am sure you have an audio CDR recorder similar to my Philips 820R, which makes bit-accurate copy of the original CD.  The copy sounds just like the original but I certainly cannot produce professional looking CD artwork or libretto on my own.

Huh? I'm talking about a CDR copy I bought from Archivmusic, not one that I made on my own!

I am aware of that.  ArkivMusic probably has some duplicating machine that allows it to spit out many copies of these CDR's quickly.  But that does not mean its duplicating process is that different from our home audio CDR recorder.  That was the point I was trying to make ...

OK, you're right, they are probably using a machine not much better than you or I could muster. I wonder if they even have the original master tapes? Probably not, just some safety copies. Why would they go through so much trouble to secure original masters just for some CDR's?

They probably used the same original CD's or LP's that can be found in the aftermarket.

I will be curious to know their CDR manufacturing process.  If ArkivMusic does receive the original master tapes from UniversalMusic, then you are talking about multi-million dollars investments will be required to copy the original master tapes to some digital medium from which CDR's can be made, which I am not sure if ArkivMusic can justify to spend ...
