Recent positive reactions to to my posting of this set...

... prompts me to ask for your favourite/recommended version of the Tchaikovsky Orchestral Suites.

I only have the above set [because I have never felt the need to go beyond it] and the following set because it features my local orchestra...

From my experience of Sanderling as a conductor of the Toledo Symphony, I can attest that he does nicely with Bruckner and other composers, but I have never heard him conduct a Tchaikovsky work.

Just for clarification the above are conducted by Stefan Sanderling who is the son of Kurt, to whom I think you refer.

Thank you for that. I could not find any Bruckner conducted by him.

With regard to the above Tchaikovsky Suites, if you were interested in hearing them the CD with Nos. 1 & 2 are the better performances of the two I think, as Suites 3 & 4 tend to fall off a little.

For the third suite the two recordings to have are (unsurprisingly) by Kirill Kondrashin on Melodiya (mono iirc) and Gennady Rozhdestvensky on Erato. I don't really listen to the others much, but I imagine similar rules apply >.>

I have Svetlanov and never felt the need to look beyond either - they are excellent.
But that's the kind of repertoire it is...An enjoyable performance will suffice. :)

Thank you for those recommendations. Now that I think of it I would like to listen to this music in the hands of a Russian conductor. If the Kondrashin on Melodiya is mono that would not bother me. I will check those out.

That sentiment has served me well thus far but now I am curious. Thank you for the recommendation; another Russian I notice.

I've had Suites 3 & 4 as 2nd-disc filler for the complete Nutcracker conducted by Dorati for a number of years now, and last year I added Suites 1 & 2 conducted by Sir Neville Marriner.

Thank you for that. Did you enjoy the Marriner versions?
