That is, the emoluments clause has not been dead, a nonissue, ignored. Nor is there any reason to view it as out of date and a yuge Trump shaped reason to assume corruption is as bad as it ever was.

     You could seek an opinion on whether a President can receive payment for writing a book and if the Congress or the Justice Dept. feels cranky they might say no. They may view the kind of businesses Trump runs as corruption magnets, as all sentient beings should, while the payments from book sales are not obviously of the same kind, though they could unobviously be. Some literary minded foreign ruler could buy a million copies surreptitiously.

     This is a waste of time, I know, I'm seriously replying to a frivolous assertion that Trump is being unfairly pilloried with an archaic law. I act on the assumption that the reason bad ideas are indulged is because reasonable people think they are too stupid to challenge, and forget that the recipients of the ideas may not be well informed on the subject.
