Pure nostalgia: The Royal Family and the Poor - The Temple of The 13th Tribe (1984):

>> Perhaps the most misunderstood band to record for Factory, The Royal Family And The Poor remain for many an (oc)cult enigma, releasing only four albums in two decades, and rarely performing live after 1984. In fact the oblique band moniker masks the identity of just one man, Mike Keane, whose chequered history is a complicated tale of perseverance in the face of adversity. ,,

... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

How is it? I have yet to spin my copy. I loved the most recent bootleg series, though, all 3CDs worth.  8)

A short & sweet alt rock record by Ian Mackaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) and his wife, Amy Farina. This was the first album by them released in 2004; they released another excellent one in 2006 called the 'Get Evens', but for now they're on hiatus due to the birth of their child.  I do hope they can find the time in the future to cut another disc, because the ones released so far were superb.

Chica Latina - a 3 CD set I got from BRO.  I thought this might have some interesting vocal music sung by female Latin American singers, but it's just dance music, at least the first CD I listened to.  Nothing interesting vocally, really.

But in the same BRO order I got Ella Fitzgerald singing Rogers & Hart, which is more like it.

Definitely can't beat that.

Kalala Shankar, Indian slide guitar.  This is Raag Yaman, set in the lydian mode (if you notice a focus on the 3rd and 7th that is the veda and samveda, or characteristic notes of this raag)

Weird how it has taken me 3 years since its release to see the value of this. It does have a bit of fan/alt pandering, but on the whole it's very neat - catchy, heavy, and despite the appearance of a few heavily processed backing strings like usual for this band, it is some pretty neat non-bs rock (with their usual alt/punk/political leanings). A lot of recent British rock is quite amazing in the lack of substance/sound it produces despite the use of two guitarists, MSP trumps that with just one in this release.

More obnoxious than listenable so far...
