I'm going deeper and deeper with appreciation of golden voices who started their careers before the second half of previous century.

Vera Lynn
Edith Piaf
Charles Trenet
Marlene Dietrich
Billie Holiday
Ella Fitzgerald (&  Louis)
Frank Sinatra

Can you recommend any others?

Thee was a thread on female jazz voices (or something like that) that would have a number of suggestions for you.

The latter goes into the 1950's, but she began in the 1940's: here is her biggest hit, in a performance when she was c. 40 years old.

Thanks. I think I have a nice list of US artists to check. Still, I need to look for other names from Europe.

XB-70 Valkyrie

I am a big Charles Trenet fan. Also, check out Georges Brassens. A great voice, and author of many racy, pointed lyrics poking fun of various people and aspects of society, etc.

Here is a video of them together--Priceless!

And one illustrating Brassens irreverent style and lyrics (R rated!)
