Quote from: Baron Scarpia on April 02, 2018, 08:48:13 AMAnd I must say it is a surprise to me to see Ives getting so many points. For the life of me, I can't imagine why anyone would listen to one of his works twice. Clearly I am missing something.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to listen to a Stockhausen or a Philip Glass piece twice, but that doesn't stop people from enjoying it. As for Ives, he was one of those composers in my beginnings with classical music that I took to rather quickly (along with Bartók). One of the things that cemented the deal for me with his music was hearing The Unanswered Question for the first time. This was a complete revelation to me and it still is. Other Ivesian revelations came from his Symphony No. 4, Central Park in the Dark, and the violin sonatas. The way he bridged the European classical tradition with a modern way of thinking plus his inclusion of rustic American music like folk songs and religious hymns was totally singular in the United States. He probably didn't win many fans, but his vision for a music that somehow took all of these different genres and made them work and form something that was so cohesive and united is truly inspiring, but his approach was also influential in the long run. You may not like his music and it's fine that you don't, but you cannot deny that Ives knew exactly what he was doing and that his music was ahead of its' time. This said, I also love Ruggles and Crawford Seeger who clearly were a part of first American modernists.

Yes, I'm well aware that he is highly regarded by some. Regrettably, I have I found nothing to enjoy in the music. It is a matter of taste.

Well, in your case, it's a matter of taste, but I'm speaking more from an objective standpoint not a subjective one.
