Huh. I like this. American, and obviously so.

Ouch, it must have been the 30 years old port I was sipping, or I am just plain stupid, I thank thee for rightfully correcting me. Why I came to a much higher pitch is beyond me! This info is important, but I cannot always find it on the net. And older recordings on Qobuz have not always a PDF file with notes, another drawback. Still, I stop guessing, when drinking beverages with a high alcohol percentage.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

And I'm curious, when was this album originally released?

PD, the date as recording date mentioned in the review is the original release date. This complete album I had when released with different artwork. The first CD of this set is the best in terms of expression and composition.

All my info points to Forde Abbey recording , Dorset (UK), 1984 and 1988. I also see the 1994 date which seems more plausible though.

Agreed. My favorite is La lisonjera.

I love "salon" music and prefer it over many pieces of "serious" (read bloated and turgid) music.  ;)

Britten: Les illuminations

Andrew Staples (tenor)
Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Harding

The moment this song cycle starts it kind of scoops you up and tosses you into a fantastic theatre, bitingly intense one moment, swooning the next. Staples and Harding rise brilliantly to the wide range of expressive intensities in a recording that has quite lit up my day.

Hurray - another fan of Don Gillis!  This series of discs is uniformly excellent.

Agreed. The whole cycle is surprisingly good. Symphonies 2 and 5 1/2 on the same release are really listenable.

I recently learned Gillis is a local to my area here, wrote some of these symphonies for local student ensembles, and taught here for many years. Need to give him much more of a listen!
