This recording comes in a box set that is already oop  .

Lucky for me that I bought this set in the complete SEON box of 50 CD's. Most of them I gave away or threw away, but the organ set I kept. :)
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I never bought those large seon boxes, two in number. There was too much of what I already had and too much that did not interest me. I also actually only bought this box for the two "Alpenländer" recordings, I had the other CDs in the box, but you know how it goes with those box editions, there are a lot of duplications.

Alas, yes you are right, much of it is of no interest, a lot of duplications, so my box ended truncated ;D

John Blackwood McEwen.
String Quartets, Volume I.
See back cover for details.
Recorded in 2001, at Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape, Suffolk, UK.

A hidden treasure. Such fine SQ. For the life of me, I do not understand the negligence of McEwen, for so little is recorded of him. Such a high standard if composing, so close to life, and yet dwelling in the mist of forgetfulness. Gossamer threads, gentle waving in the stir of the moment, almost ethereal.
As a performance it seems hardly possible that it can be bettered. Sound is sublime.

That's odd, it does not show up when I go to the discography of this composer, only the Chandos disc is shown. So how did you find it, so I may repeat the trick.
Well I be ........., when looking this morning it did not show up, and now it was the first CD that showed up. Grumpfffffff.

Well continuing w/ Schumann chamber music this morning - two versions of the Piano Trios - both equally enjoyable to my ears - reviews attached for the interested.  Dave

Arthur Sullivan.
Orchestral works.
See back cover for Works.
BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Richard Hickox.
Recorded: 2000, Studio 7, New Broadcasting House, Manchester, UK.

Truly a wonderful recording, and SOTA sound. I love the works by Arthur Sullivan.  Sullivan was a master of melody. Hickox makes me aware of this by letting the instrumental soloists virtually sing.

Recently I listened to two Hindemith sonatas for solo viola, the first and the last (Op 11. No 5 and one from 1937). Complete misfires (in terms of my ability to appreciate them). Then I listened to the first sonata for viola and piano (Op 11, No 4). Wonderful work! Lawrence Power and Jesus Rodolfo were both fine performances (the miracle of streaming). I decided to listen to some more Hindemith in a similar vein and settled on the first violin sonata, Op 11, No 1. Again wonderful work. I found recordings on cpo and BIS that are very different.

Now, it has dawned on me that Hindemith's Op 11, a collection of six sonatas for solo instrument (some with piano) is pure gold. It is quite baffling that no enterprising record produce has (as far as I know) collected the six sonatas in a single release. You have to scrounge around and find them by various artists (which is what I am doing).

Steven Gerber: Symphony No. 1

And a disc of arrangements some of his chamber works for orchestra.

I suppose he didn't write enough music for orchestra?  Anyway, it's all very well done.

Two wonderful new releases by these powerhouse pianists. It's sometimes hard to believe that just one pianist is playing the Wagner transcriptions.
