Do you guys have the same problems with, say, Morning Heroes (another favorite of mine with narration)?

Narration doesn't always work with me either. I can't stand listening to Lélio for example. Egmont also grates, but not as much.

Disc five equivalent, including the Triple Concerto.  If I cared enough about the piece, I might do a shootout.

Not in this case, no.  ;D
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Some of the better, recent discoveries include

- Gibbons - complete 'piano' works /Piennaar/deux-elles 2CD
Excellent, highly recommended. Also illustrates some of the older dance-sources for Bach's works.

- Buxtehude - cantata collection, Membra Jesu Nostri ... /Suzuki,Bach Collegium Japan /bis CD
Frankly, it's the only Buxtehude I've heard that really interested me, besides a solo cello transcription at a concert in France. Beautiful and engaged performance.

- Ysaye - 6 Solo Sonatas /Kaler /naxos CD
Likewise excellent. Didn't have a complete CD recording, only LP, and this one is superb.

Yes. Unfortunately there's no direct email address online to ask him.

Thinking of it again I don't have the booklet, as it wasn't included in the Presto download. Perhaps he writes something about it there.

A penny for your thoughts.

Not the worst I've heard.  The last three quartets are well enough done, definitely an older school take than one hears now, but the early quartets are too heavy.  In terms of complete sets, the Auyrn are much better, and they are also better in the last quartets.

Only my second listen of these works, Lol. Definitely ones to revisit again. I enjoyed the 1st most this time around but only because the 2 symphonies in a row was too much and my attention drifted off. Will have to take on the 2nd on its own next time.

Yes, I understand that, Olivier. I found the 1st a bit tame, from a past age, so didn't even bother with the 2nd. A couple of months later, out of curiosity, I did get around to the 2nd and much to my surprise loved it! If I give the 1st a second chance I wouldn't be surprised if I love that too. :-* Listener's mood and concentration levels are a factor.
