That's a good one, Jeffrey. I like De Preist's other Shostakovich recordings, too. I haven't heard them in ages, though.
I found it a gripping performance John. I also like the recordings of the 11th Symphony from Lazarev, Karabits and Berglund. Of course the Kondrashin is a classic performance as well as being the first one that I knew on LP. I actually bought it at a Soviet exhibition in London!

Which Karabits Symphony 11 recording, Jeffrey?

I have a live recording of Karabits Shostakovich 11th that came with a BBC magazine that I quite enjoy!

Perhaps THE all-time great worst Prokofiev cycle!

I fixed what I can only assume is a typo or autocorrect accident. :)

I think we need Sarge's cannon.  ;)

Don't forget about Haitink! Wow...smoking performance! Very cool about the Kondrashin. Of course, you can't go wrong with his Shostakovich.

Indeed! But I know Järvi has his detractors. I've always liked his conducting.

I like ambient music - aside from classical listening, I like a fair bit of shoegaze and atmospheric black metal/funeral doom that can have this sort of quality.

You and I would get along

For what it's worth, Feldman is one of my favorite composers. I discovered his music last year and it's a full blown obsession.

I enjoy Philip Glass a great deal, too. Repetitive minimalism has some real attractions. As I say, maybe I just need to listen more. I think my confusion or disappointment was more that I expected something different. I'm nothing if not tenacious, but there are probably other priorities for me before Feldman. Who knows? :)

Composers like Mahler, Strauss, Shostakovich and Sibelius appeal to me more than Feldman ever will, but I do enjoy his music on occasion. I can't share your fondness for Glass however. I created a meme that I'm rather proud of:

So much great music, so little time...

Probably the boring, diluted Ozawa Berliner cycle. :D

Shostakovich: Symphony No.11 'The Year 1905':

Excellent choice! I 'imprinted' on this recording so I'm always happy to see it. I think I read a positive review in Fanfare Magazine in about 1992, and then-teenage me was obsessed with Shostakovich, so I had to have it! Apparently, DePreist also recorded it with the Oregon Symphony, also with Delos. Interesting.

Thus concludes my survey of Järvi/Wagner/de Vlieger. The Ring is full of glorious music that never disappoints.
So much great music, so little time...

Kitajenko and Rostropovich. I also found Gergiev and Ozawa disappointing.

Well, you never know, John. You may yet still someday become a Glass fan. If you haven't got rid of your Glass recordings (if you have any), history shows that you should do well to hang on to them.  ;)
