Jules Massenet.

Orchestral Works.
Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Neeme Jarvi.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Barbirolli's 1967 recording of Vaughan Williams' A London Symphony is one for the ages. The performance of the second movement, Lento, is a miracle. The intensity, yet poignancy of the climactic section of the movement a tour-de-force of sensitivity and control of sonority. It must have been an intense feeling to be in the room when such a performance was recorded. I have not heard the earlier recording, although I presumably have it in the box Barbirolli box.

The earlier recording is in the Warner Barbirolli box. I said I marginally prefer it but should have added that the Lento in the later (1967) is indeed miraculous.

How's that?  :)

Morning listening:

PS Great playing, two beautiful organs which are superbly recorded. But the switching back and forth between the instruments bothers me a bit more than before.

I had canceled the order with Amazon and purchased the box with six CD's.
Despite the cancellation I got my money back and I am still offered the set from Amazon today with the message that I do not have to return it.  :)
It will be delivered today...

Harry

Georg Philipp Telemann.

The Grand Concertos for Mixed Instruments, Volume VI.

La Stagione Frankfurt, Michael Schneider.

Wow, how beautiful these performances are, and so well recorded. For me this is reference material.

Agreed! :)
Even though a variety of performers is involved, the quality of the performances is consistently high throughout.

I've always been indifferent to Philip Glass, own few recordings, but find his Echorus for 2 violins + string orchestra really beautiful. Got a recording by chance, part of a big 20th century compilation.
But it wasn't enough to start me on an acquisition program...recently considered (from Berkshire, van Veen on Brilliant) his Piano Etudes but never ordered.

That's a good bargain set - very good value if you just want to dip your toe in to the Etudes though probably not the best 'complete' Etudes out there.
I have surveyed them all here:

Glass often writes sweet music. In the summer house is one of the exceptions to this rule, harmonically really interesting and sweet is isn't quite the right word for it. The music by Nico Muhly on the CD suggests to me that he's probably worth exploring.

I"ve been spending more time trying to decide what to listen to than listening so I've decided to see if organization will help.  Picking a batch of discs and setting the composers in alphabetical order (no Quantz, Uhl or Xenakis in my collection that I can remember)
ANTHEIL  Symphonies 4 & 6, and McKonkey's Ferry
National S.O. of Ukraine,  Theodor Kuchar cond.
BORODIN: Piano Trio in D (unfinished), String Sextet in d,
String Trios in g and G  (2 violins and cello)
Serenata alla Spagnola
Kinsky Trio Prague with the Pražák Quartet
CHAPI" Sinfonia in D, Overture to Roger de Flor
and Scherzo Combate de Don Quixote contra los orejas
Orchestra de l'Academia dei Gran Teatre dei Liceu
Guerassin Voronkov, cond.
I will continue with Vernon Duke, Enesco until Ysaÿe and Zandonai

I don't dislike Glass. Earlier used "indifferent" in the dictionary sense. Thought the few recordings I bought were OK, but they didn't have a lot of "staying power" and I wound up not listening often.
