Schütz

Musikalische Exequien

This is still my favorite performance of this work. About fifty years ago I heard it for the first time and was immediately captivated by its impressive choral singing, sung with boy sopranos, which give it an authentic character in my opinion.

Johannes Brahms: Clarinet Trio in A minor, op.114. Thea King, Karine Georgian, Clifford Benson

Amazing performance of this richly sensuous work.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

First listening ever to the violin concerto. The 3rd symphony is, as always, a superb musical experience.  What a great orchestrator Alwyn was !

Returning to Lalo's Symphony, this time in the de Almeida/Monte Carlo recording

(I have posted the LP cover, but I am listening to a CD release from the 1990s which is long out of print).

Very satisfying recording. The tempos here are slower than the more recent recordings I have listened to (Bakels and Andretta), and the effect is expansive, rather than breathless. It is nice to have both approaches, because if sometimes Almeida doesn't convey the momentum of the music, you can clearly hear the melodies, harmonic progressions, and orchestration.

The audio is splendid, a perfect example of the silky sound of Philips in the late analog age.

Bernac and Poulenc left behind quite a legacy of recordings, most of them recorded for EMI and RCA in 1947. However these Columbia sessions took place in 1950. The Poulenc selection is self recommending, but he is equally at home in the songs of Debussy, Ravel and Satie, embracing the lyricism of Debussy's Beau soir, the slightly detached irony of Ravel's Histoires naturelles or the parodic wit of the Satie songs.

Anyone who enjoys the subtle art of French song should definitely hear them.
