Alban Berg: 3 Pieces for Orchestra, op.6. Antal Doráti, London Symphony Orchestra

Sounding better than ever, at this moment striking me as a cross between middle period Mahler and Debussy. These are good recordings of all these pieces. Very decadent.

Damn. I didn't hear such a quotation, though I did find it a lovely symphony... I must re-listen ASAP!

Meanwhile:

Franz Schubert's
Symphony No. 6

Jonathan Nott, Bamberger Symphoniker

Try from 31:48 in the last movement (Chandos recording)
Here's an extract from the Wiki entry:
'These passages, although highly diverse in their style and orchestration, all derive their core material from the primary choral melody of Bach's song Komm, süßer Tod.'
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Alban Berg: Violin Concerto. Anne Sophie-Mutter, James Levine, Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Wonderful performance from all forces.

Disc two.  Is the Kabelac Third the best ever symphony with organ?  I have no idea as I've heard only a few, but it is my favorite of the ones I have heard.
The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Lalo: Divertissement [Andretta]

This is very pleasant, if not memorable, music. It is well orchestrated, to be fair.

On a Sibelius binge today, listening through Berglund's first set, with a pause to compare 2nd symphonies with Toscanini and Szell.  Berglund is definitely becoming a favorite set for me, it's beautifully recorded and has great transparency, but nobody can touch Szell IMO in the final movement of the 2nd, just amazingly intense stuff:

I'll second that vote for the Berglund. It's excellent.

First listen to anything by this composer.
Highly impressed.

I have a feeling the greater shock will be yours if and when you hear it  >:D

Oh, Harpsichord. This is the sort of think streaming services are good for, something you are sure you will never want to listen to again. :)

Symphonic Addict

Today an Austrian program:

Bruckner: Symphony No. 9
Schubert: Piano Sonata No. 21
Haydn: String Quartet, Op. 74-3

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Symphonic Addict

Braunfels: String Quartet No. 3

A first listen to this recent release. I hope the other quartets will be more engaging as this one left me wanting more. More listens will be necessary to grasp it better I guess.

Currently playing this for the first time. I very much like this performance.

Morning listening:

An entire disc of music by Jean Mouton (1495-1522)!  :)
Though the liberal use of plainchant means that we end up with a full mass and three motets.
