This is one of those pieces which, while it is rare that I think "this is what I want to listen to," once I set the CD to playing I am completely engaged.

Superb.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

A recent recording from 2015.  Apollo's Fire, entirely new to me, is a period ensemble from Cleveland.  On the evidence of this recording, they have their act together.  And they have a decent discography on their own label.  Jeannette Sorrell has command of the work.  Perhaps more investigation of the ensemble's discography is in order.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of them before. I have a couple of their CDs, and while I agree that they have their act together, they're not a favorite of mine. (I prefer La Serenissima and Illyria Consort among the newish groups.) But the usual de gustibus applies. I think they have a number of videos on Youtube that will help you judge.

While not a top tier composer, I'm inclined to say Alfven deserves more recognition.

Saw someone mention Dutilleux 1 in the "pieces that have blown you away" thread and decided to revisit it.

Lisztianwagner

Quote from: k a rl h e nn i ng on December 19, 2022, 07:02:48 AMOne of my favorite Stravinsky scores!
It is a very suggestive work indeed, very particular for the combinations of techniques, but really beautiful!

Quite nice, thank you.

I think this is a first listen to any of these works

I mentioned the odd packaging in the New Releases thread.
It's also a very short CD, only about 45 minutes long.

Excellent performances. The sound is very good, but the mics are closer in the Smetana (probably a different concert--the Qobuz version has no notes), and they pick up a fair amount of breathing/sniffing.

Panufnik: Symphony No. 1 'Sinfonia rustica'

Another cycle to revisit, and a solid work to start out. I find this music to be fresh and original in a certain way.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Rachmaninov: The Isle of the Dead

It took me some time to appreciate this atmospheric masterpiece.
