Quote from: Todd on January 07, 2023, 05:56:24 AMThe Owyhee Canyonlands area, spread across Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada, is about the size of Massachusetts and has only three paved roads.  (Eastern Oregon is remote and lightly populated; for other examples, Wallowa County is the size of Delaware and has no stop lights, and Lake County is the size of New Jersey and has a population of about 8,000.)  This is the type of view one can expect in the northern part of Owyhee Canyon:
Beautiful view of a region I didn't know about. I'm just going to translate those sizes to European places for Jeffrey...

Using your Massachusetts comparison point to judge the size: the canyonlands area is about one-third larger than Wales (and Lake County is slightly larger than Wales by itself). Massachusetts is more than half the size of England, about the same size as Belgium and the Netherlands combined.

Mozart

Le Nozze di Figaro

High time for a Mozart opera, I remember the excitement I felt when I listened to operas more often in the past, especially the great Mozart operas, the Carmen, Boris Godunov and Don Carlos for example. Time for more attention to what has given me so much joy in the past.

1 & 2.  I came to this via Natacha Kudritskaya partnered with Danial Rowland, who led the Brodsky for a dozen years.  Since I own the first Brodsky cycle, I did not bother with this initially, but under Rowland, the ensemble sounds rather different, more expressive, less sleek.  I like what I'm hearing.  I will have to work my way through the cycle.
Thanks - what a spectacular view.

So beautiful, graceful, but also so emotionally compelling music.

Indeed, a most lovely work, easily my favorite Mozart, along with the Divertimento for String Trio and Symphony No. 39
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Agreed; I don't know if I can define it as one of my favourite Mozart's works, he composed so much great music; but certainly, this Sinfonia Concertante is terribly enchanting anyway, especially the Andante, particularly moving and expressive.

No.1 is quite Scriabinesque, characteristic but I found it rather academic, dense and a bit turgid.
No.13 from 1933 is a fine work and much more interesting. It's one of his most modernistic scores, at one point reminding me of the music of Carl Ruggles. It is in one movement of about 20 minutes and I play it often. It wasn't very well received at its Soviet premiere in 1934 and had to wait 60 years until it was performed again (in Wales in 1994). Fine performances from the Ural Youth SO under Alexander Rudin:

Completely charmed by this recording, though nothing is groundbreaking and the orchestra is no great shakes either.

On one hand, I cannot gainsay your précis at all. on t'other, in spite of both reading this fairly unapproving summary and my own net negative recollection, I enjoyed listening to it just now. Perhaps my having warmed to Bax is somehow the catalyst.

Quote from: vandermolen on January 07, 2023, 12:32:02 AMThere were some really interesting releases in that Naxos Japanese composers series, including the moving 3rd Symphony by Moroi, Hayasaka's Piano Concerto and the 1st Symphony by Hashimoto, to name a few of my favourites.

Yes they all are nice, unique music, and the performances were fine too.
