Wow, Temirkanov's Tchaikovsky is really quite excellent!  After Symphony # 4, I finished the disc with Fatum Op. 77, a work I definitely need to get better acquainted with, and then tried his Swan Lake Suite, which is among the best I've heard.  Very happy with this set so far!

Moving on to an old favorite disc from Fricsay... hard to imagine a better recording of this music...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

There's also Prosseda's set, although it's not hypercomplete.

Termikanov is basically as good in Prokofiev as Tchaikovsky.  (He's good in everything.)  If you have not heard it, you may want to consider hearing his Alexander Nevsky recording.

Thanks, I may well seek that out.

Not sure why I'm in such a Russian music mood today, but I'm going with it :)  Next up...

Very similar in style to Tchaikovsky. Many beautiful passages (although perhaps not quite as beautiful as Tchaikovsky), and the ending is very satisfying.

Now CD 6, the Fifth and Sixth String Quartets of Bazzini.

Written in the last half of the 19th century, but sometimes a bit conservative: the finale of the Fifth sounds somewhat like Haydn. Overall typical Romantic music making of good quality.

I started the morning on Spotify with this:

Which immediately scared the hell out of me due to the excessive vibrato by Véronique Bourin, who sounds like a goat on steroids... Cipriano would turn in his grave... :o

Then settled in with this:

And thanks for the info re Dvorak and Jarvi Harry!  :)

Listening hear....started off with a CD by Andsnes for "Wintertime" by Norwegian composers (lovely, but decided that I needed something zippier for me this morning).  I eventually wandered my way over to Szymanowski on Naxos and listened to his first violin concerto.  Maybe it's just because I'm starting to fade energy-wise (got up awfully early today), but it didn't really grab me.  :(

PD

I'm dipping into the Suk set and liking what I hear, PD. The recording dates range from 1958 to 1965. It must be said the violin balance is a tad close in the earliest recordings which is rectified by cutting gain. Balance for recordings post 1959 are fine. Excellent booklet with photos of Josef Suk with Navarra, Holecek, Panenka and Hala all of whom feature on the set.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.
