Thank you Andrei. However, it can sometimes be frustrating being unable to express oneself adequately.

Morton Gould

Couperin/Milhaud

Roy Travis
Symphonic Allegro

I had heard the Gould before (in the Mercury Living Presence series) and was indeed the only Gould I had heard, until hearing his Philharmonic Waltzes, also here in the Mitropoulos box. It's good music, and Gould deserves better than the near-complete obscurity into which he has fallen. Likewise, this Symphonic Allegro by Roy Travis, a name completely new to me. Hear for yourself:

Hi Fergus,
I streamed a shortened version of this (new to me) work by Karajan a little while back. It had some really gorgeous moments.

First listens.

Earlier on, Nino Rota - Concerto Soirée.

Now his Symphony No.3.

Vivaldi: Credo in G major, RV 592- Crucifixus etiam pro nobis [Spinosi]

This wonderful piece of music lasts less than three minutes but it certainly packs a punch in terms of music quality, vocal and instrumental presentation and emotional impact.

I had the von Karajan on vinyl myself and I did enjoy it. I did, however, cull it from my collection simply because it was not complete. The Bonynge set is delightful.

Not the best Mahler 2, but the only one with Gabriela Beňačková.  Or at least the only one I am aware of.

I am a chamber fan in general. As in, I tend to prefer chamber music to orchestral music for most composers.

I will make sure to check it out.

As a younger man, I focused on early music and chamber music, the latter mostly from the Classical Era. Nowadays, it tends to be orchestral and choral music, but if I deep dive a composer, I make sure to slowly spend time with their chamber output too, as I am doing with Dvorak.

Superb playing and sound. The contrasts between works is less jarring than I anticipated.

His piano works are well worth checking out--have a strong Scriabin and Rachmaninoff influence.

I finished listening to this excellent SACD set. It's my favorite digital recording of the works (despite being a little too reverberant for my taste). The Grumiaux recording is superb, too, and has great sound. It might be a bit more elegant, but the Fine Arts Quartet is a bit more assertive. I suppose it boils down to my mood...and whether or not I want flip sides!

CPE Bach: Cello Concerto in A, Wq. 172
McGillivray, Manze: English Concert

I've heard this before, but I don't remember it except for the 3rd movement. Each movement seems more interesting than the previous. I'm not a huge fan of the period instrument sound in this recording, though. Some of the lower orchestral parts in the 3rd movement can be a bit hard to hear.

It turns out that I have 3 recordings of this concerto. I also have Steckel on Hänssler and Wallfisch in the Brilliant Classics box. I did some quick comparisons of the beginning of the 3rd movement. McGillivray appears to be the best and most expressive soloist. The orchestral playing for Steckel's recording is better, especially in the clarity of bass lines. However the 3rd movement is too fast. Wallfisch takes a similar tempo to McGillivray, but the performance is boring. From my brief comparison, none of the recordings are perfect, but McGillivray is one of the better options.

I suggest trying Truls Mork:

Trying Sabaneev.

Not hating. Also not getting Fauré vibes.

Another impressive piece by Villa-Lobos! I especially like the beautiful first movement.
