Quote from: aligreto on February 12, 2023, 02:48:48 AMCheers, Jeffrey. I particularly favour the later Shostakovich myself and regard them, in my limited experience of the genre, to be among the best String Quartets to be written by any composer.

Fergus, I believe Jeffrey is referring to the Myaskovsky String Quartet No. 13, part of the Pacifica recordings.

No worries! Only after he pointed out NYM did I realize he was referring to the Myaskovsky.

I can attest to the quality of the Myaskovsky quartets (via the Taneyev Quartet recordings of them).

I should look into obtaining the Pacifica recordings of the Shostakovich quartets!

I must admit it was spellbinding. I believe I only listened to this once work before, via my Boulez Ravel/Debussy DG box but had no recollection of it. I read the Dutoit being strongly recommended here ages ago, saved it on Idagio and I eventually gave it a go! Beautiful indeed.

A superb Rach disc.  Kind of a pity the pianist switched to conducting.

I'd also recommend Monteux's Decca recording with the LSO. Sonically it can't quite match of course, but it's remarkably good for a recording made in 1959 and the performance is wonderful.

The Munch from a few years earlier is also worth hearing.
