Glière: Harp Concerto
Tabakov: Double Bass Concerto

Two highly contrasting works. The Glière is such a delectable peach, imbued with sweetness and enchanting writing. The main melody in the 3rd mov. easily sticks in your mind, so lovely and memorable. No wonder why it's one of the most recorded harp concertos, I love it.

Whereas the Harp Concerto inhabits a placid sound world, this terrific work by Tabakov lies in the opposite pole: it sounds sinister, baleful, somewhat relentless. It gave me a quite good impression. Along with Tubin's Double Bass Concerto, my favorite concerto for this instrument. I feel more invigorated to listen to his symphonies soon.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

First listen to Handel's Oratorio Saul, the Jacobs recording:

Beautiful.  I'm really impressed with the playing of Concerto Köln.  For once strings playing with "straight tone" don't sound whiny and scapy, but precise and transparent.

The highlight for me is the serenade which I had not listened to in quite awhile.

I had the opposite reaction. I found the generally gentle, autumnal approach to the music was rewarding in the 3rd symphony, but not successful in the Serenade, which I felt needed a more energetic performance be convincing. Just my personal reaction, of course.
