Antonín Dvořák
Violin Concerto, op. 53
Romance in f minor, op. 11
Humoresque in G-flat Major, op. 101 no. 7 (arr. Kreisler)

Anne-Sophie Mutter, violin
Ayami Ikeba, piano (Humoresque)
Berlin PO - Manfred Honeck

I am sure like some others on GMG, I am so overly familiar with Dvořák's 9th Sym., I wish someone would do something completely different with it.

Yet, I rarely take out Mutter's recordings because she does just that. Still this is very good, particularly notable for Honeck and Berlin.

Paul Dukas: La Péri. Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Antonio De Almeida.

Spotted Horses

Finally resumed listening to Faust's recording of the Sonatas and Partitas, and concluded with the Partita #3.

Generally found it quite satisfying. Looking back, my first exposure to this music was Grumiaux, and I wonder how I would react if I listened again. It's been years.

Kertesz is, I find, always worth a listen in whatever music he presented. His was a tragic loss to the music world.

Gerhaher/Huber  Holliger, Schoeck and late Schumann. Wigmore Hall."This evening's recital centres on insanity " according to the programme. I think there may even be a livestream.

Audience good mix of ages. OMG, there's someone taking a selfie a few rows in front. Wouldn't be surprised if the mean age is mid 30s.

Electronic devices off. Bye.

Poulenc: Trio for piano, oboe and bassoon [Le Sage/Leleux/Audin]

This is a terrific piece of music; short but very sweet indeed.
The opening movement is bright, pleasant and cheerful. The recording quality is excellent and this portrays the sonics and textures in this music wonderfully well.
The slow movement is charmingly lyrical with just a hint of poignancy to it. The harmonies are simply wonderful.
The final movement is great fun and it has great energy to it. I particularly like the piano line.

The highlight for me is the serenade which I had not listened to in quite awhile.

The big revelation so far is as follows: Gerold Huber is a top tier pianist. He is making the big Steinway sound nuanced and subtle and expressive and . . . beautiful.

The first half opened with some nice things,  early Holliger and Wolf, but was ruined for me by about half an hour of Holliger 's Lunea. Opera transcribed for piano and voice,  didn't work for me.

Perhaps Lunea is the insanity they promised?

Second half disappointing. Schoeck elegy was sung in a completely pedestrian way, I felt that about his recording with Holliger, so no surprises there for me. The Schumann Husarenlieder Op. 117 seems just totally uninteresting music to me. And the Schumann Gedichte von N Lenau und Requiem Op. 90 -- a Gerhaher speciality -- was spoilt by some unpleasant timbres when he sang loud. I have the distinct impression that Gerhaher is not as good as he used to be.
