Thank you, Jeffrey. Personally, while I do like the Levitan painting, I think a painting from a Finnish artist would have been more appropriate --- I mean we all know that Finland was a grand duchy under Russia, but still, there's many great Finnish paintings to choose from.

Like this one from Järnefelt for example:

I like that painting as well. Gallen Kallela is popular with Sibelius cover designers:

I think I'll go and have a listen to some of Schnittke's cello music now.

Ralph Vaughan Williams - Symphony No.6 (Davis / BBC SO)

Generally considered the best in the Andrew Davis cycle.

TD:
Thomas Griffes: 'The Pleasure-Dome of Kubla Khan'.
My favourite recording of this extraordinary work. I had the RCA LP, which also featured a fine recording of Howard Hanson's 2nd Symphony.
Charles Gerhardt, RCA Symphony Orchestra or 'National Philharmonic Orchestra' as it says on the LP sleeve.

These classical titles don't give much away do they? "Cello Concerto No. 1" sounds pretty harmless :-\.

Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 6 [Previn]

Previn portrays and maintains a very good sense of menace, drama and tension throughout the work. His approach, for me, is steadily driven and unrelenting which, in itself, facilitates and perpetuates the atmosphere of the work.

Schnittke - Piano Quintet. The non-classical rule of playing CDs all the way through in order really isn't a good idea, it's nice to hear a piece in isolation with some space around it.

VW Symphony No. 6

Listened to Berglund in this the other day.  Manze's interpretation does not get a very good rating from Victor Carr at Classicstoday.  He also describes the recording as "dim", which I find somewhat perplexing.

On to Andrew Davis on Teldec...

And finishing up for today with Previn

[asin] B019STIIHA[/asin]

The oldest recording in the set I've listened to recently, but the best sonics.  I also think he has the most sensible tempos and is the most coherent.  I still haven't gotten to the recording that was my previous favorite for 6, Boult in stereo on EMI.

Sibelius: Violin Concerto [Oistrakh/Rozhdestvensky]

Oistrakh is always great in the Sibelius Violin Concerto, magnificent even. This version is powerful, emotional and lyrical.

André

A truly great performance, but dimly recorded (1951 vintage, sounding more like 1940). Amateurs of Knappertsbusch, Furtwängler, von Hausegger or Kabasta in this work will find that Abendroth is fully their equal. Its interpretive standpoint is close to Kabasta's and von Hausegger's.

I assume the Franck and Faure are with Pierre Barbizet - great set!
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

A recent mp purchase:

Frescobaldi: Arie musicali & pieces instrumentales

Ensemble HOC OPUS

[asin]B0017WTD4O[/asin]

Long oop: an early 1980's recording, on the Lyrinx label.

Very nice!  Notable for the contribution of vocalist Claudine Ansermet, who delights throughout.

Sound is very live, being a two microphone recording.  Really wonderful acoustic!

Only real negative is the 40 minute playing time (not too unusual for recordings from that era).  But what 40 minutes!  Very enjoyable.  :)
Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

That Paray/Saint-Saëns is a great recording! I would love to hear that Perahia Schubert.
