Yes Jeffrey, I remember Daniel's posts in the thread, i am pretty sure he had his own YT videos of some works as well.

Can't remember trying his second symphony, will have to remedy to that as well.

Yes you will Olivier!

Bach : Ingrid Matthews

Hat tip to Sonic Dave for introducing me to this recording.

My morning listening starts with a return to this:

[asin]B0086WQO9A[/asin]
Posthumous musical tributes by younger contemporaries in memory of Johannes Ockeghem.
The Missa Sicut Rosa Spinam by Jacob Obrecht takes center stage, next to shorther compositions by Pierre De La Rue, Josquin Desprez, Antoine Busnoys, and Johannes Lupus.

I never can understand why Britten's two concerti are not played more often. They are both very approachable and enjoyable.

Superb performance of the piano concerto by Richter, who apparently learned the work of his own bat. Lubotsky is not quite up to the considerable demands of the violin concerto (even Heifetz asked for a simplification) but it's still a very good performance. Both works feature the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by the composer.

This had been waiting in the shelves for a while:

Wonderful. The small Renaissance organ sounds much more impressive than it looks!  :)
The tientos with their stretched fugues are more suitable for listening a few at a time.
Brilliant did an excellent job on the recording, as did Francesco Cera on the performances.

I haven't looked into new recordings of these pieces for a while now (last time resulted in he purchase of François Fernandez' recordings on Flora), but I'l give this a listen.  :)

There's some discussion of the Ingrid Matthews Bach S&P (among others of course) over on the Bach S&P thread starting around page 7:

She came equal 6th in our blind listening comparison (Mullova came top, ahead of Lucy van Dael).

The Nutcracker

Shorter than either of his other ballet scores, and not so symphonically conceived, The Nutcracker neverthless contains some of Tchaikovsky's most inspired music. I especially love Act I, particularly from the scene with Clara and the Nutcracker, though the battle and onwards into the transformation, with the inclusion of a chorus in the Waltz of the snowflakes at the end of the act. Act II is of course more in the manner of a divertissement and therfore more diffuse, but the pas de deux with its swirling string figures is absolutely glorious.

I used to have the old Concertgebouw/Dorati on LP and still have a great affection for it, but this is possibly the best of the three in the Previn box and is still very satisfactory.

My favorite complete nutcracker

Also love the old Ormandy/Philadelphia highlights and the simple suite from Rostropovich/BPO

Previn is quite OK, but Svetlanov (Melodiya) excels in all three ballets IMO.

Have you heard the earlier LSO/Dorati version which was on Mercury? I haven't but some say it is even better.

So I understand. However his versions are not so easy to acquire and much more expensive than the Previn, which can be had very cheaply on amazon UK (£2.17 for the issue I detailed).

Indeed! There was a set issued in 2012, it was not cheap and is already OOP.
The ballets are still available separately, though each will cost more than the Previn set.
What can I say? It's worth it....  8)

I am so glad you like it. It had a very firm recommendation from me. Enjoy!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I found this CD transfer.

However there appears to be yet another with the Minneapolis Symphony.

I don't know the date of this one, though.
