A basset clarinet in authentic style!  :)

It is a very good recording.

Symphony no 1. Symphony no 2 follows.

My favourite recording of my favourite Kabalevsky piano concerto - No.1

An interesting approach to this music; I'm quite enjoying this...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

Florestan

One thing that strikes me is that Renaissance music never seems to go beyond Andante in terms of tempo, with the most common being Adagio, nay, actually Largo. Also, long and very long note values. And all that, no matter if the subject is Orlando's chivalric exploits or Kyrie eleison. How come, I wonder?

Officium Novum
Jan Garbarek, The Hilliard Ensemble

QuoteThe inspired bringing together of Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble has resulted in consistently inventive music making since 1993. The unprecedented "Officium" album, with Garbarek's saxophone as a free-ranging 'fifth voice' with the Ensemble, gave the first indications of the musical scope and emotional power of this combination. "Mnemosyne" (1998) took the story further, expanding the repertoire beyond 'early music' to embrace works both ancient and modern. Now, after another decade of shared experiences, comes "Officium Novum", the third album from Garbarek/Hilliard, recorded, like its distinguished predecessors, in the St Gerold monastery. A central focus this time is music of Armenia based on the adaptations of Komitas Vardapet, pieces which draw upon both medieval sacred music and the bardic tradition of the Caucasus. The Hilliards have studied these pieces in the course of their visits to Armenia, and the modes of the music encourage some of Garbarek's most impassioned playing. Alongside the Armenian pieces in the "Officium Novum" repertoire: Arvo Pärt's "Most Holy Mother of God" in an a cappella reading , Byzantine chant, two pieces by Jan Garbarek, including a new version of "We are the stars", as well as the Spanish "Tres morillas". There is also a new account of Perotin's "Alleluia, Nativitas": the freedom of interpretation is testimony to the way the project as a whole has grown since its introduction on ECM New Series, with the Hilliard Ensemble now very much involved in the music's improvisational processes and implications.

A superb, very evocative work. Recorded in 1979. The solo voices are well caught, not too distant nor too close.

Great stuff! Kalinnikov's tragic early death robbed the world of a great talent.

Deliciously indulgent and passionate music, in a matching performance by Svetlanov.  :)

Neidich is a veteran, grizzled or no.

Agreed with Karl:)
Neidich did a wonderful recording with the Archibudelli Qt of Bijlsma et al:

[asin]B0000028Z3[/asin]

Which has been reissued in this 3CDset:

[asin]B009EJSTZQ[/asin]
Which should be no obstacle, since every disc in it is pure gold! :)

Earlier, String quartet No. 1

To be an early work is a little complex in its rhythm and form, therefore sounds very interesting. I liked a lot what I heard. This set looks promising.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

My introduction to the work from the record library and still my favourite recording of it.

I've put that on my wishlist a few weeks ago. Is it as good as it looks?

I like it, but I usually like what Dominique Vellard and Ensemble Gilles Binchois do.  The music is austere and definitely of the Middle Ages, which might put off some listeners not used to the sound environment of the earlier period.

Roasted Swan

This is a really excellent Christmas Anthology if you don't just want wall-to-wall carols or novelty arrangements.  Finzi's In Terra Pax is disarmingly beautiful.....

I'm a big fan as well, rarely encountered anything I didn't like.  :)
