Janacek - a Chandos CD of mostly early works for string orchestra.  I was particularly looking forward to the second work which was the premier recording of Suite:  On an Overgrown Path.  I love the solo piano arrangement but the string version didn't quite work for me; I felt like it didn't quite have that same haunting effect.  Has anyone else here heard this CD before and if so, what did you think of it.  The two other works are early Janacek and are pleasant enough.  Here, I think that I enjoyed the Idyll the best.  Also, I do possess a different recording of the Suite (on Panton which I seem to recall enjoying more so than here).

As a side note, the liner notes state that in 1901/02 Janacek composed fie movement for harmonium, which were published bearing the title 'Slavonic Melodies'.  These formed the basis for the ten-movement Series 1 of the piano cycle On an Overgrown Path, published in 1911.  Series 2, consisting of five movements, were published posthumously in 1942.  The Suite performed here combines the five 'Slavonic Melodies' in their original order, with a later movement from Series 1, 'Come Along!'.  This recording for string orchestra is based on a string quartet version made by Jarmil Burghauser in 1978, and adapted by Gregory Rose with his kind permission.  Above notes by Gregory Rose

Am curious too as to whether or not anyone has ever tried performing and/or recording them on a harmonium and what that sounds(ded) like?

Best,

PD

Dvorak's Bagatelles has the harmonium taking the place of viola in a string quartet. Attractive pieces but the sound of the harmonium is strange.....don't think it will catch on.

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Kara Karayev: Seven Beauties Suite
Immensely enjoyable:

Absolutely, a stunning disc, no doubt!

Still in my relax mode, so no music to arousing.

Joseph Haydn.
Complete Baryton Trios.
CD: IX.
No: 60-66.

Esterhazy Ensemble.

The only complete set available, and probably the last. For which record label is eager to record all these wonderful Baryton trios, Hmmmm?
And frankly I see no reason at all to start a new project, for we have to my ears quite definitive performances. This ensemble is as it were, made for this music, and their performances throughout the whole set are exemplary. They clearly enjoyed their time with the trios, and this you hear in every composition. So Bravo to Brilliant, that they ventured into music that was neglected for a long time.
Sound is top notch.

Kondrashin's Sheherazade with the Concertgebouw in stunning form is justly famous with Hermann Krebbers providing the delicously seductive solo violin.

The coupling is a live performance of Borodin's Second Symphony.

Over the last 3 days: Vivaldi, Tito Manlio

Worth mentioning primarily because I found some of Act 3 today really affecting. To be honest I don't get an enormous amount out of listening to these operas abstractly, with almost no idea of the plot and no libretto to follow (I'm just streaming them to try). But occasionally the sheer wow factor of the arias comes through, and the first part of Act 3 was one of those times.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

John Blow.

An ode on the death of Mr. Henry Purcell.
Songs from Amphion Anglicus.

Not really a good performance, due to middle of the road sopranos and a counter that knows no bounds in expressing himself in an overwhelming way.

Arcangelo Corelli.
Sonatas opus 5. 7-12.

Frans Bruggen, Anner Bijlsma, Gustav Leonhardt.

A very pleasant performance of the opus 5 concerti. Everything is tip top, not a foot is set in the wrong direction. Bruggen his Recorder sounds soothing on the ear, and Bijlsma and Leonhardt follow him on the note.
Sound is excellent 1979-1980.

The final disc in this set gives us Dvorak's famous and most well known symphony, From the New World. It's an excellent, dramatically alive performance, if not the best you will ever hear.

Nonetheless this is a very satifying box set at the price.

Giacomo Facco.
Pensieri Adriarmonici. 6 Concerti, opus 1.

Antonio Vivaldi, Concerto in G minor, RV 57.

L'Arte dell'Arco, Federico Guglielmo.

I find this disc a highlight from the big HM box. Such fine music! And the performance is superb. Had much pleasure listening to it.

Interesting!  What recording(s) have you heard that on Irons?  Or only on YT?

I did a quick bit of googling yesterday and ran across this (re the Janacek):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LathOQvCca8

Interestingly enough, I also ran across this (piano) which I really enjoyed--particularly as I've never seen anyone play this work before.  Alas, I had never heard of the performer before, but I did quite enjoy it!   :)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLr0bh6h3O4
