Ralph again...

First listen to Symphony No.3 by Previn / LSO.

An absolutely phenomenal recording. I bought it on the Saturday before Easter last year at a local record store and loved it so much I decided to buy the whole Previn RVW cycle. Unfortunately I don't like anything else on it near as much. I should have just stuck with that disc.

vers la flamme

Sergei Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor, op.16. Vladimir Ashkenazy, André Previn, London Symphony Orchestra. One of the craziest works ever written for piano and orchestra. That first movement cadenza is relentless. In fact the first movement is almost nothing but piano with just a bit of light orchestral accompaniment. Completely unique. I'm ready to call Prokofiev one of the greatest of all time on the strength of this (early) work alone.

A pity. Did not the 8th work for you?
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Vaughan Williams: Symphony No 3 'Pastoral' - BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins - a second listen, enjoyed it more than the first time but still think the off-stage trumpet is too distant

All this enthusiasm for the EMI Elgar/VW Barbirolli disc is hard to ignore, I'll be putting out feelers. The Elgar Introduction and Allegro always seems a forerunner to Tippett's Concerto for Double String Orchestra to me. Though I have no idea what the latter actually thought of the former.

Scelsi: Uaxuctum

Second listening for this piece, wherein all the lost souls in the world seem to have come together to share something of their experience. An intriguing and somewhat formidable work, I don't know if I've been completely pulled in by it as yet, but shall certainly be revisiting.

Uaxuctum was the first work I heard from Scelsi. I enjoyed the work enough to investigate more of his music. Another favorite is this recording:

It seems to be a work of some renown amongst Scelsi fans, but for some reason I've only got round to listening to it in the last month or so, despite having enjoyed other pieces of his. Thanks for your recommendation above.

You're welcome. Oh yes, I'd say Uaxuctum is well-known by fans of this composer and proved, for many, to be a gateway into his sound-world.

Vivaldi: L'Estro Armonico, Concertos Nos. 1-6 [Hogwood]

I thought that I would rectify the fact that I had not listened to Vivaldi in quite some time.

Check the disc label again.   ;)  It's Maxim Shostakovich conducting.  (This was the premiere recording of this symphony.)

Of course it is. Thank you.  :-[

Yes, I never understood that cover art.

Perhaps an early attempt to convert to veganism?  :D

By the way we should be more aware about what comes out of the mouth instead of what we put into it
