NP: Martin Petite symphonie concertante (Jordan/Suisse)

Why this work isn't programmed more often or a part of the mainstream repertoire is beyond me.

I wonder if this is Jordan's third recording of the Petite Symphony Concertante, or if is one of the two I know. Who are the soloists?
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

Sorry, not choral but definitely creepy and dark. More importantly a masterpiece, anybody with the slightest of interest in Warlock must hear "The Curlew". My favourite recording (LP) is an old Argo - like it so much to take the trouble of visiting the place of the cover image! More plentiful on both vinyl and CD is an excellent EMI recording featuring Ian Partridge.

Yeah  that true, mister Warlock  remain very interesting an I halso have the Curlew,  great works by the way!

Good choice, I have a lot of time for the symphony... But my one gripe is that the finale wears its influences a little blatantly (it really is the love child of Tapiola and RVW's 4th!).

Yes, both styles are quite clearly perceived on Moeran's piece, but even so, the way the composer assimilated the influences of them is satisfying, makes sense in the end.

I think Frank Martin is underrated in general. You just don't see his name too often, but, man, he composed some fantastic works.

A sort of reality, but I do recognize his voice or style is not totally convincing or enjoyable to me. I mean, he can sometimes be too 'dour' in a wide sense.

Shostakovich's 7th, perhaps one of the greatest recordings I've ever heard.  btw I listened to the 1st symphony last night.

A real blast of a recording and performance, but even so I love it.  :)

After a second listening today both works 'settled' even better. I could see either one making a splash in the concert hall. Truly splendid.

All what I have heard by this composer has been so compelling. I've been exploring more of his works. I do detect why he's sometimes regarded like 'the Nordic Bartók'. His symphonies are also very worth listening.

They appear to be the same as on the apex label recording I know (also with Jordan/OdlSR) - Guibentif (harp), Jacottet (harpsichord), Ruttimann (piano) - so I assume it's the same.

Such a distinctive work! I became a big fan of during covid lockdown.

The Partita for harpsichord and orchestra is a mesmerizingly brilliant and dark work!!

This deserves to be on the category of masterpiece.

Must be the same 1991 recording Erato/ Cascavelle / Apex.
There is an OUP 2005 Cascavelle recording with Jordan /Lausanne ChO/Xavier de MAISTRE, harpe, Jory VINIKOUR, clavecin, and Dénes VÁRJON, piano.

Now on the richly textural Symphony No. 2 by Lutoslawski. Textures, sonorities, short and long notes interwoving.

The Korngold Symphony recording from Sinfonia of London (chandos). I regret all the years I didn't know this piece but I'm glad this is the recording that introduced me to this larger than life gem. Almost certainly my most played classical recording of the past 12 months and still a joy.

I'm open to any Korngold recommendations, I'm really not familiar with him at all and it needs to be fixed!

Some of his most chromatic works are the chamber pieces. I especially love the String Sextet, Piano Quintet and the Suite for two violins, cello and piano (left hand). The Symphonic Serenade for string orchestra, Piano Concerto, the incidental music for Much Ado About Nothing, his another symphony in all but name Sinfonietta (a fantastic and precocious creation) are also favorites. I yet have to hear more of his operas, though.

Haven't heard it (yet?) but I do think any Hindemith chamber music with viola worth looking into.

There seem to be three performances available on YouTube, although in one of them a saxophone is used in place of the heckelphone.

Well I had myself an evening.

I started with this:

I don't know if it is the recording or the Spotify master but it is very compressed.  Also thought the tempo was a bit too fast.

I moved on.  Anyway after not caring for one Bartok recording I returned to a gem:

And I finally found a Bach Brandenburg that was more my speed:

but I'll have to spend more time with it to see what I think.
