Fortunately I have most of the music already...there is much to enjoy!
"adding beauty to ugliness as a countermeasure to evil and destruction" that is my aim!

One of the great Kabalevsky CDs IMO:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Overtures from the British Isles.
Volume II.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Rumon Gamba.

A absolute marvelous series initiated by Chandos, As disc I number II gives equal pleasure. Unknown works, or almost, by known composers, recorded in marvelous sound, and it must be said, perfect performances. Recommended, both volumes. This CD I am going to use as a test CD on my new Esoteric CD player, amongst others.
That CD cover features 'The Long Man of Wilmington' hill figure which is a local feature of my walks on the South Downs. Recently it was defaced with a medical mask:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

The new erato

Very nice disc, good music, fine recorded sound:

The Daphne label has a couple of very fine quartet discs by swedish composers, Wirens quartets are the other.

I've been on a swedish listening streak recently with Rosenberg, Larsson and Moses Pergament. Now summoning up courage to bite into the recent Petterson no 12 which arrived yesterday,

Did you manage to find a copy of Rosenberg's Sinfonia Grave?

Unfortunately, no. There's a Swedish site with some 90 Swedish Society Discophile recordings available, but that was not one of them.

I'm sorry to hear that. One will turn up sooner or later. I'll keep my eyes open.

Now playing: Kabalevsky Piano Concerto No.4 'Prague'.

Some interesting characters. First listen. Was on sale at JPC. The music seems well-crafted. String compositions by the English composers, with a bit of say those by Honegger and - much less, though - Pettersson, come to mind.

Although I did hear the end of the symphony (a sentimental favorite) I did not hear of the performers.

Now:

While I have enjoyed unqualifiedly and found much to admire in, the previous 27 discs, we exult in solid gold territory especially now.

Early, mid and late Tansman. A span of 54 years is covered on this fine release.

Irons

Bax: 1st Symphony.

A max Bax period coming up due to a subtle hint to the wife - Amazon link - that Lewis Foreman's biography would go down well at an upcoming birthday.

No better place to begin then the 1st Symphony. I listened to Thomson's recording 24 hours earlier. I am a great admirer of the Chandos set and it was Thomson who introduced me to Bax. But Myer Fredman brings more to the table, more dramatic and mystical. The second movement passed me by in Thomson's recording, Fredman sent shivers. The Lyrita recording is very good with the LPO trombones particularly well caught by the engineers.
I am being hard on Thomson but it would not surprise me at all he comes out top further down the line, not here though.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.
