Mozart, WA - Fortepiano Concertos w/ Viviana Sofronitzki and the Musicae Antiquae Collegium Varsoviense; she plays on a Paul McNulty fortepiano after Anton Walter; McNulty and Sofronitzki are married, and she is the daughter of Vladimir Sofronitsky (1901-1961). My other 'period instrument' recording of these Wolfie works is w/ Malcolm Bilson & Gardiner (last pic below) - have not done any comparisons, but might like Sofronitzki on the fortepiano more and the English Baroque Soloists a little better, so maybe a 'toss up' for me?  Dave :)

I forgot all about those lovely recordings from Sofronitzki, I must give it a fresh listen.

Austere, late Stravinsky but still deeply alluring and definitely worth checking out, especially if all you know are the three famous ballets, which seems like it accounts for A LOT of people!

Someone is on a Schoenberg marathon. ;) I know, I know...I'm certainly guilty of it as well. Schoenberg's a favorite of mine as well.

Tell me John, is this music truly as sensuous and sensual as the cover suggests? Is what you see truly what you get? If yes to both I'm really tempted.  ;)

I like Schoenberg's lieder very much, but I can't say for certain that you or anyone else will. I suppose you'll have to not look at the cover to make this assessment. ;)

Got it. The cover is misleading, ain't it?  ;)

Most of the more recent Capriccio covers I've seen are garbage to be honest about it. Let's take our pal Enescu for example:

I mean....uh....could they have come up with something better? This looks like Little Red Riding Hood meets Snow White: "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?" ::)

Not Schoenberg, but see what you think of early Webern songs -- I think you'll love it.

No, really, i've seen that cover many times over and liked it while at the same time wondering if it matches the music. Now I am advised to the contrary. Thank you, pal!  :)

Hah! This is indeed bad but let me explain to you why I find it to be bad.

Strigoii in Romanian means "The Male Ghosts" so any cover featuring girls / women is badly mismatched. Now, if we had Strigoaicele instead, that is "The Female Ghosts", it would have made more sense.

(Gender in Romanian is very important; one of the funniest thing for a Romanian is to hear them mismatched  --- Transylvanian Hungarians are particularly prone to this as Hungarian has no gender distinction at all.)

Hey, loved that indeed, all of them --- Wolf's shadow looms large.
