Dyson: Symphony in G.

On first hearing I wasn't impressed. The third movement (a set of variations) and finale is a mess as I thought at the time. The mist has cleared and now I rate the symphony highly. Perseverance paid off. Took two CDs to swing it, after pretty extensive listening prefer the urgent Lloyd-Jones to the more upholstered Hickox.

I have both and love them in equal measure, its a great symphony, never a tough nut for me to crack.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I found the BWV 582 very enjoyable on this one. That's all I can tell you, Que  :-[

Lovely! Villa-Lobos is favorite of mine. Do you own much of his music, Olivier?

I love this Kraft CD, John. I only own two other Bachianas set, Schemerhorn and Batiz. I remember liking the former. I should revisit it really.

And there's so much beyond the Bachianas, I highly recommend the SQs, Piano Trios, Chôros and the solo piano works. Of course, there is so much more awaiting your discovery!

Anton Rubinstein
Symphony 2 in C Major "Ocean", op. 42
Slovak PO - Stephen Gunzenhauser

Not too bad, but Rubinstein could learn efficiency. Of course I said the same about Glière's Symphony 3.

The 1st movement is the best - well structured and tuneful. I hear snatches of Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Beethoven in this symphony.

I have not heard Golovchin and his Russian players in the original 4 mvt. version vs. this 7 mvt. revised edition. I suspect, I wouldn't have missed much. The 2nd movement, 18+-minute "storm" sequence would not be a huge loss, especially considering this Slovak orchestra.

Good? Theo Olof is a violinist I admire. On vinyl he is collectable and expensive.

I am not sure how good the performance is. I don't know the work very well. I have owned the Olof recording for many years but haven't listened to it very often.

Nono - Das Atmende Klarsein. I've played the whole album through, enjoy all these choral works.

Dussek, Jan (1760-1812) - Piano Sonatas w/ Maria Garzón on a modern instrument - these are both 3-CD sets, so 7+ hrs of music - I put together a Spotify playlist and listening at present on my den stereo. Now, I own the 10 Brilliant volumes of Dussek's piano works on fortepiano and enjoy tremendously; not sure that these performances will be added to my collection (looking online at the Heritage website and Presto, cost is $25 USD/set) - several reviews are attached, but better of course 'incomplete' piano versions exist, e.g. Markus Becker.  Also attached is a list of the pieces on the Brilliant discs from the Craw catalog - I've put an asterisk (*) at the ends of those that match what Garzón has recorded, nearly 30 or so.  Dave :)

The music is undeniable beautiful. Miniatures with a deeply felt message, and so well played. It gets so easily under my skin.
Reminds me greatly of Edward Grieg's piano music, be it that it is done in a wider tonal palette.
Recorded sound is so well done that you feel the piano is right in my listening room, no walls just open airy sound.
