Too many fragmentary pieces on this disk doesn't make it a very enjoyable listen.

Morning listening - another Huguenot composer:

Good morning Que!

If only Dominique Visse would not be part of it all, but alas. Most of the stuff with him as a singer I culled from my collection, despite the fact that the music is to my liking!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I don't know that CD Irons.  How is the Nielsen?

I have a 2-CD set which I really like that was recommended to me a few years ago...struggling to recall who all it was with at the moment and am feeling lazy and not wanting to climb the stairs, but will check on it soon and drop you a line.  Ah!  Think that I found it:  https://www.amazon.com/Sibelius-Finlandia-suites-symphonic-poems/dp/B0000041L7

Underwhelming, PD. Not just the 5th, as on LP I have with the same forces the 4th and my reaction is the same. I find Gibson's measured approach works to the manor born for Sibelius, one of my favourite conductors for the composer. In Nielsen I find Gibson a bit dull. A case of horses for courses.

Horst Stein is a fabulous Sibelius conductor, I wish he recorded more. Don't think I have heard Ashkenazy.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Immersing myself in the world of Britten at the moment. Today it's the Piano and Violin Concertos. There have probably been better versions of the Violin Concerto than Lubotsky's but I doubt anyone has matched Richter in the piano concerto.

I've always also enjoyed this disc, which couples the Frank Bridge Variations with Les Illuminations and Lachrymae. Though the first performance of Les Illuminations was given by Swiss soprano, Sophie Wyss, it was more often than not sung by a tenor (usually Peter Pears). These days, however, we often hear it sung by sopranos, though I think this recording featuring Christina Högman was the first, if not the first, studio recording featuring a soprano. Very fine it is too.

6 minuets, WoO 10 (piano version, the orchestral version now is not original) ... oh wow, the 2nd minuet is something VERY familiar.

Listening to Duparc again.

The other night I tried to have it on as semi-background, and only went about halfway. But this is not background music. These include some of the best songs written by anyone, and they benefit considerably from giving them full attention and, if not a French-speaker, reading along.

Paradisi Gloria is a great ongoing collaboration between symphony orchestra and religious community, with an emphasis on 20th & 21st century sacred symphonic choral works. I have seen a handful of these releases on Profil and BR Klassik.

Igor Markevitch's Psalm setting is the most interesting here. Rhythmic and percussive, it often hearkens the voice of Stravinsky. Naxos has an 8 volume series on I. Markevitch's compositions that I have never explored, so I might delve in.

These are taken from a couple live recordings, with mixed results from a variety of choirs and conductors. Very compelling programming at its least.

I purchased it primarily for the Stein's Nightride and Sunrise, but believe that I also enjoyed the Ashkenazy.  It was recommended to me by an old acquaintance of ours from earlier days.  :)

Sorry to hear that the Nielsen fell short for you.  I'll have to pull down my Gibson boxed set (Chandos) and spend some time visiting with it.

Currently, working my way through an EMI CD which has Moeran's Serenade in G and his Sinfonietta.  On first listen, the Serenade was o.k.   :-\ Will give it another go soon.
