Oh, Mr B. Kind of knew what you were doing, huh?

Not often that I revisit the LVB symphonies, due to the oppressively large number of other compositions that I love or want to discover, but there a sublime genius to this music. I know I'm stating the patently obvious, but still.

Recording seems pretty good to my amateur ears. Fairly randomly chosen, I confess.

I like the quote in your signature:

"Without obsession, life is nothing"
John Waters

Seems to wrap up my worldview  :P

Now playing:

Maurice Ravel: Valses nobles et sentimentales; Pavane pour une infante défunte. Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

This set came VERY highly recommended to me a couple years back by an odd character on another forum who is an avid, card-carrying Ravelian (I believe he was active here at one time; Paul Best, if anyone remembers him). Anyway, it seems this guy thought this was the only Ravel solo piano set worth listening to. Can't say I share that sentiment, but it is very good, both in terms of technique and sound, but also interpretation; it seems to be a more modernistic, less impressionistic take on Ravel. Razor sharp. Well worth a listen.

Nice quote, but if the author is John Waters of cinematic infamy, I hope you have different obsession(s)...

Some comparative Beethoven listening (Op. 59 no. 2, Op. 130, Grosse Fugue):

For my taste today, Budapest sounding the best.

OMG!  ;D  I remember Paul Best but not his personality (except he was definitely opinionated) on this forum (or possibly elsewhere, such as Amazon?) - I also have and enjoy Bavouzet's Ravel; my only other recording of these works is added above.  But there are SO many options out their were just 2 discs work to please anyone, IMO - Dave :)

I'm in good company. Yours, not Waters ...😀

Paul is quite the character; he was banned from the other forum I was referring to in 2019 and I haven't heard from him since. Hopefully he's still out there somewhere, enjoying the music of Pettersson, Schnittke, Elliott Carter & Hans Werner Henze with passionate fervor  ;D

My go-to pianists for Ravel are Samson François, and more recently Pascal Rogé, but Bavouzet is quite fine. Listing my collection makes me realize, maybe I ought to hear a non-French pianist take on Ravel. (I do at least have one disc of Martha Argerich playing Gaspard and the Sonatine on DG.) But even still there are many French pianists I have yet to hear in this amazing repertoire. Ravel is one of my favorite composers and I especially value the piano music.

Chopin polonaises are my work-from-home accompaniment this morning.

I'm starting with the disc that has the youthful works. Will probably follow up with the mature works later on. Chopin was very cooperative in writing just enough polonaises to make this split between CDs work well.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

I think the rest of that set is merely good, but I find the performance of the first 2 symphonies to be among the best I've heard.

You had no idea that Hindemith wrote three Piano Sonatas? I love these works, but I only know them from this MDG recording, which is excellent:

There are several recordings of these sonatas nowadays. I'm thinking about getting a second recording of them --- I think I'll go with Markus Becker on Hyperion.

The Heidseick is available as a download and I think he did a good job with them.

Cool. Thanks for the link, but I'm going to see if I can get the Becker on Hyperion.

Pleased to see Berkshire has this for $6.99. Put it on wish list for future order. [Added: that's my go-to source for Hyperions.]

Yeah, I'm not in any rush to buy the recording, but that's an excellent price no doubt about it.

I can pronounce Gubaidulina, but I'll have to work on the other names. ;) Anyway, I'm blown away by this work. It's really outstanding. Gubaidulina's musical language is completely her own and what I love about her is she follows her own intuition as a composer and, honestly, I find this refreshing to hear. I'm definitely looking forward to digging into more of her music, especially in the recordings I already own and what I also bought today. Should be an interesting exploration.

I find the recording by Werner Haas (and a recording by his wife) interesting. It is a little sharp and certainly non-French. Also I think Mirror Image and I like the Tharaud disc.

Yep, huge fan of the Tharaud Harmonia Mundi set. He's sensational in Ravel.
