Penderecki's Symphony No. 3 with Antoni Wit and the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Katowice) on Naxos -- Jaw dropping!  Mesmorizing.  Haunting.  First heard it used in the movie Shutter Island  Not for the "Faint of heart".  ;)

In great sound too!  :)

Excellent, glad to hear that you enjoyed it, PD!  :)

I am now listenig to The sixth symphony from this set

Back on Spotify, a change of pace:

Joseph Haydn
Piano sonata in B minor, Hob. XVI:32
Piano sonata in C major, Hob. XVI:35
Piano sonata in C-sharp minor, Hob. XVI:36
Piano sonata in D major, Hob. XVI:37
Piano sonata in E-flat major, Hob. XVI:38
Piano sonata in G major, Hob. XVI:39
Ekaterina Derzhavina, piano

Technically sound performances, but a bit mannered in spots (clipped phrasing, ritardandos for dramatic effect, fast tempos in a couple of finales.) I think I prefer Brendel and Bavouzet in Haydn sonatas, though Derzhavina has her strong points.
So much great music, so little time...

Thanks!  It was great to hear it in its entirety.  :)

I did do a quick look around on Amazon and saw that there was a recording of the composer himself conducting it (don't know if it was live or a studio one).  Have you heard that one ON?

No I have not heard it. I'm only familiar with the Wit recording.

The older set you pictured above doesn't contain any of the live performances that the newer iteration does (also the newer Warner set contains EMI live recordings, which aren't available anywhere else since EMI owns the rights to these recordings). Truth be told, it's the live recordings where the magic lies and you can really hear Tennstedt come alive. There's actually another box set of his LPO live recordings that you may want to check out:

This set contains the best performance of the 6th I've heard.

Thank you very much for the information, John. Much obliged. Perhaps my friend was not too far off the mark originally.

As you will have read above I am only new to Tennstedt's Mahler and have only begun to listen to this cycle.

Welcome to GMG, by the way. Good to have you on board.

You're welcome, Fergus. You may remember the former member Mahlerian was quite the fan of Tennstedt and he's actually the one who turned me onto his live Mahler performances. I'm thankful that he did, too. I miss his contributions. Besides Mahler, he was rather knowledgable about the Second Viennese School, Debussy and Takemitsu.

And one of mine too, I must admit. It was the first Mahler symphony that I ever heard. That was way back when I was in my mid teens [when Mahler was not long dead  ;D].

I do indeed remember Mahlerian. It is such a pity that these members come and go for various reasons. So much knowledge can be so easily lost to us.

Absolutely. There's so many members I miss conversing with like Luke and Dancing Divertimentian for example. I suppose we should count our blessings that these members' posts still exist and we can go back and re-read them.

It's been a while since I listened to Tennstedt's Mahler... I might have to revisit it soon!

TD:
As recommended by Cesar (Symphonic Addict), the complete Bergakungen

Alfven
Bergakungen (complete ballet)
Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra
Yevgeny Svetlanov

(on Spotify)

Absolutely delightful! Great tunes, stunning orchestration, and a top-notch performance too. Some ballets seem to lose a bit of their effect without the dancing (I listened to Glazunov's complete Raymonda a while back, and while it was easy on the ears in the best of ways, I couldn't help but think something was missing) - but not Bergakungen. Just beautiful music from first note to last. Thanks Cesar!
So much great music, so little time...

Fauré: Les Djinns [Gardiner]

I particularly like this short work. I find it to be intriguing. I like the dynamics in the work.

I am only new to it but based on the little that I have heard thus far I certainly think that you could do a lot worse things with your time  ;D

Apparently, Spotify is (or was until a few minutes ago) down...  :( so off to YouTube:

Brahms
Symphony no. 4
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Eduard van Beinum

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeUteN1t-G0

Sensational performance of the whole symphony... but especially the finale. On the quick side, but it totally works. Gripping and passionate, beautiful playing (especially from the strings), and I love how the trombones cut through the texture.

I share your  enthousiasme for this recording.  :)
