Liadov: 'Fragment from the Apocalypse'

Seemed appropriate listening for these depressing times:

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Johann Gottfried Walther.

Complete Organ Works.
CD 12 from 12.
Concerto transcriptions by Walther from the composers, Taglietti, Telemann, Torelli, Vivaldi
Simone Stella plays on a Francesco Zanin organ, 2006.

Fine performances and very good sound to boot. I thoroughly enjoyed this set with the organ music, a worthwhile acquisition in every respect. This music never bores, the organ sounds bloody fantastic, and Stella is an ace on this instrument. I will return many times to this set, as long as my ears work.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Thanks. Hope the Ukrainian grammar is up to snuff...

I have a female friend to stay with me for the time being, with her little daughter, she fled from Kiev, and said yes the grammar is okay, and my rudimentary knowledge thinks its okay too.

Tchaikovsky 4th symphony and Brahms: 2nd symphony, LSO Karl Böhm

The Tchaikovsky was a late entry into Böhm's repertoire. He also conducted it with the Czech Phil (available on Orfeo), a more volatile reading than the LSO's.

The Brahms 2nd was a favourite he performed often and with many different orchestras. Hi Berlin Phil live from 1970 (on Testament) is a scorcher, an incredibly intense performance. The LSO pictured above is from the 1973 Salzburg Festival. They also did it in London in 1977. Clearly there was a strong rapport between orchestra and conductor. Big, hefty strings and ringing brass are the hallmarks of this excellent collaboration. Good broadcast sound.

Well, please pass on my best wishes to them both, whatever the best wishes of an anonymous Australian-Englishman on the Interwebs are worth these days. And my condolences to them both at having had to deal with a dictator at first hand, and all that he has wrought.

I think everyone here on GMG joins in that.
May she be able to return home in peace and security.

And now for some musical rest, this CD is already a best buy 2022 for me. Unfortunately it does not get much love on GMG at the moment, but hey that might change, if I recommend it, right? (Fat chance)

Third time I have listened to this CD, and there will be many runs to come. Its simply perfect

Zara Levina: Piano Concerto No. 1

The first sounds a bit like Rachmaninoff, the second concerto a bit like Prokofiev, though there's a definite individual personality here.

Nice! The 1st concerto is very enjoyable but IMO the 2nd is the winner in its greater individuality and concision.

Oh, it seems I need to give In the Faery Hills another listen since I don't recall having enjoyed it as much as you, Kyle.

Great selection of works, btw!

Thanks, Cesar! While I wouldn't rank In the Faery Hills amongst Bax's most immortal masterpieces (;)), it's a very beautiful work nonetheless.

Thank you Andrei, and yes after what she got through she thinks so too. And she told me that there are still many mothers with babies and very young children in Kiev, that really breaks my heart. I wish I could take care of them all. :(
