Tonight, more music from the Italian novecento: Ghedini's Concerto dell'Albatro for piano trio and orchestra, with reciter (who reads excerpts from Moby Dick in Italian translation), and Pratella's Trio, op. 28. The performers are the Brahms Trio, who in the Ghedini work are accompanied by reciter Giorgio Giavarini and the Haydn Philharmonia conducted by Ezio Rojatti.

The Ghedini concerto so far is sounding quite wonderful!

Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos 1 & 3 Andante and Finale op.79  Antoni Wit  and Bernd Glemser on piano                                                                                                                                          7

A good, serviceable version - therefore expendable.

Some nice things here, esp. in the slow movements. I personally prefer the sextet in its original garb - it's expanded to a small string orchestra (about 20 strong) in this performance. The painting by Klimt that adorns the cover is entirely appropriate.

Moby Dick or Rime of the Ancient Mariner? I don't remember albatrosses having any important role in Melville.

Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 (Semyon Bychkov / WDR Symphony Orchestra, recorded live in April 2005) - Might be my favorite of recent versions. (But that said, there are a lot of them!) Bychkov has great passion and nuance, and the orchestra sounds fantastic.

Haydn, Joseph - String Quartets, Op. 9 w/ the London Haydn Quartet vs. Quatuor Festetics, both period instrument groups - except for Op. 1/2 which I have only with the Buchberger Quartet, I seem to own 2-3 interpretations of each of Papa's SQ Opus numbers, most w/ these two groups along w/ Quatuor Mosaiques - reviews attached of the shown performances for those interested.  Dave :)

I'm absolutely BLOWN AWAY by this work. Count this as one of the masterpieces for voice and string quartet. It joins the Schoenberg's 2nd SQ, Barber's Dover Beach, Schoeck's Notturno, Ginastera's 3rd SQ et. al.

Bachtoven

Excellent playing and sound. It also includes the Sinfonia Concertante K.364.

Moby Dick, it seems. I must confess I haven't read Moby Dick :-[, and wasn't paying much attention to the recitation, but it's about an albatross captive on the deck of a whaling boat.

Here's the cover of the score:

Yep, from the Sony box.  An incredible bargain when new.  Streamable now, of course.

Revisiting this CD I bought a couple of years ago, and enjoying it as much as I remember the first time:
