Disc 11 of this set is entirely dedicated to music by John Bull.

Brahms

Ballades op.10

The first acquaintance with Brahms ballads was in a performance by Gilels and I was totally blown away by the depth of the music and its convincing performance. Later I got to know the recording with Michelangeli which in my eyes surpasses that of Gilels.

The piano used in this recording was over 60 years old at the time.

Bloch: Schelomo [De Machula/Van Otterloo]

This is a dark and sometimes turbulent work which is given a dark, powerful and emotional performance here.

Mozart Serenade K 185, very nice performance definitely held up.  Marriner was a great pioneer of the early divertimenti which are still not that well represented on recording.

And Prokofiev's magnificent cello symphony!  I'll probably listen to the Britten later in the day.

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Moussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition [Uninsky]

Some that know me here may need a cardiologist when they read that I prefer the original solo piano version to the orchestrated version, and I started listening to the orchestrated versions originally.  ;D

Usually turbulence, darkness and angst draw me in more than music that is more serene, pastoral or easier listening. I love all of Arnold's symphonies but am increasingly taken with 1- 3, 5 and 6.

All of Arnold's symphonies are special despite my own preferences.

Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 8 [Barbirolli]

Robust, powerful and atmospheric is how I would describe this presentation.

A very appropriate work in these troubled times - fine performance as well. Hickox was a great loss to music.

Yes, it is a fine performance from the dedicatee of the Symphony No.8.

And a work that deserves to be better known! Dona Nobis Pacem is my favorite Vaughan Williams work so far, especially Reconciliation. I recall enjoying that performance when I streamed it.
