Haydn op.2 no.1 (Auryn Quartet)

The trio in the 2nd movement is delicious.

The acoustic is a bit too resonant for my tastes, but I rather suspect that the playing is going to completely trump any of the limited alternatives for op.2.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Excellent performance, has emotional weight but is not romanticized.

Maybe if I heard something else by Bruneau? There's not a lot available on the streaming services. I'm always open!

I don't think I've heard anything by Pavlova yet, though I'm curious. I'm gathering the 'faceless and forgettable' comment applies to her Fifth Symphony? ;D

The whole disc actually. What I hear in these two works is eminently listenable, often quite beautiful but I don't detect a structure, a direction, a purpose. I feel like listening to movie credits music for a solid hour. Very pleasant as you make your way to the exit. Once you're out though, nothing remains.

Lovely! Zemlinsky is a great favorite of mine. Hope you're enjoying Lyrische Symphonie. This work is sometimes unfairly viewed as the Mahler Das Lied little brother, but I disagree. It's a work that stands on its own and has something of interest to say musically.

From this set -

I've been thoroughly enjoying this box set thus far. I'm still kicking myself that I haven't explored Grieg's solo piano music sooner. Knardahl performs incredibly well. In fact, I'll probably find myself imprinting on her performances and I'll end up developing one of those nasty biases, but I do plan on hearing some other pianists in this particular repertoire. I probably won't get the Naxos complete set, but I do plan to dip into my own collection and see what else I have --- I know I have some Leif Ove Andsnes and some others.

Excellent music, excellent set, excellent taste, John!

Thanks, Andrei. I thought I would give my ears a break from the noisy, avant-garde stuff that I also enjoy. ;) I agree with you about this set. Of course, I don't have anything to compare it to since this is my first foray into Grieg's solo piano music, but man is it glorious so far!

I have 2 complete sets: the one above and the Geir Henning Braaten on Victoria (part of the complete piano, chamber music and songs*). I have never made any A/B comparison, though --- my favorite set is the one I currently listen to.

There are also very good one-disc selections, for instance Gilels, Andsnes and Hough.

*btw, try the songs as well --- they're rpobably his best kept secret.

Thanks, I'm considering the lieder set on BIS at the moment (w/ Monica Groop and various pianists). I do own the Anne Sofie von Otter lieder recording on DG and it's excellent, but hardly represents this particular part of his oeuvre.

Yeah, I've seen that one, but I don't like Davidsen's voice that much. I'd like to find all of those lieder volumes from the Grieg Edition on the Victoria label, but they're difficult to track down individually, but I do like more variety in lieder in terms of vocalists, so it looks like I'll have to continue to search for them as the BIS box set only has Monica Groop.
