the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Vaguely planning to listen... sadly the libretto in English doesn't seem to be available anywhere (short of Google translating the Czech)

My copy of the Supraphon disc you show has an accompanying booklet with the libretto in Czech with English, German and French translation. It is a single disc and booklet inside a cardboard sleeve.

Love these Supraphon covers in the Suk series!
Honestly, I bought them for the cover!

Yeah, they're cool. This is one only one I have in this series with this kind of artwork. I never bought the rest individually, because I own this set:

Dry Brett Kavanaugh

Paul Creston: Symphony No. 1.
Theodore Kuchar/Ukraine.

Before heading into work:

Kabalevsky
Colas Breugnon Suite, Op. 24a
NDR Radiophilharmonie
Adrian Prabava

Such a fun romp!

As I said. Saint-Saens composed 12 and only Samson and Delilah is popular.  :)

With the exception of the likes of Wagner/Puccini/Verdi/Mozart really MOST well-known composers who wrote a lot of operas are well known for just one or two.... think Tchaikovsky/Massenet/Smetana/Mascagni/ even Donizetti - perhaps Rossini sneaks in with about 3 'known' out of LOADS!  Then the likes of Prokofiev/Rimsky-Korsakov are "known" as opera composers but how many folk really KNOW any of their works complete (not just orchestral excerpts....)

Good point.

Yeah, it's a good gig. Those three in a row off, if something doesn't come up, I have plenty of time for music. 8)

What would we all GMGers do without music, I wonder? I can't even imagine a life without music.

Same here. You might as well put a bullet in my head. Aside from my parents, it's the one constant in this life that has given me everything. One thing it hasn't done much for me is my insanity. :D

Arnold Bax.

Piano works.
Volume III.

Ashley Wass, Piano.

With every CD I play containing Bax piano music, I fall deeper in appreciation for the way he handles music for that Instrument. Intimate small scale, but at the same time the music has the wide and depth of an orchestral composition. One of the pieces " Lullaby" makes your heart leap, with all the different moods and the microkosmos it creates. But in the broader sense "Two Russian Tone Poems" are of a far more grander scale. Wass feels the music and plays accordingly. The sound is very good!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"
