I don't know much of Rorem's music. In fact, I ask myself if I know any...?

This likable set has Rorem SY1 (listed as SY3), and it sounds pretty good.

I know Serebrier has all three of his symphonies on Naxos, but Abravanel and Bernstein covered his 3rd in particular (and I think his Violin Concerto with Gideon Kremer/Bernstein).

I am certain I sang some of his choral music at some point, but for the life of me, I can't remember which at the moment.

Over the last few days:

Lutoslawski
Cello Concerto
Andrzej Bauer, cello
Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra
Antoni Wit

Prokofiev
Violin Concerto no. 1
Violin Concerto no. 2
Scottish National Orchestra
Lydia Mordkovitch, violin
Neeme Jarvi

Not a big fan of Mordkovitch's violin tone... a bit rough and strident. But I do like Jarvi's way with the accompaniments (and Prokofiev in general.)

And a comparison of Mendelssohn 'Scottish' Symphonies:

Boston Symphony Orchestra
Charles Munch

Israel Philharmonic Orchestra
Leonard Bernstein

Both exciting and beautifully played (especially Munch)... though I might slightly prefer Bernstein because he does less pushing and pulling of the basic tempo than Munch does. One thing that's a pet peeve of mine, and both Munch and Bernstein do it: taking the coda to the symphony so slow (at least at the beginning) - now both performances speed up as it goes along (in Munch's case, way up), but I can't find the justification for starting it at an Andante at best. It's marked Allegro maestoso assai, and I guess maestoso implies a certain degree of broadness, but this much? I can't see it. Abbado has the right idea - starting the coda at a moderate-to-moderately-fast tempo while still allowing it room to "pick up steam" as it progresses.

I should add that the Munch disc contains the best performance of the orchestration of the Scherzo from the Octet that I've heard. Really excellent.
So much great music, so little time...

Vítězslava Kaprálová: Military Sinfonietta Op.11
University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Kiesler

I've seen this disc appear here a number of times, and decided to dip in today with the Military Sinfonietta, which I must say seems very well done by the UMSO and Kiesler. And the work itself was a delight, full of shifting orchestral colours and youthful energy. She was quite some talent. Tragic she departed this life so young (25). Looking forward to working my way through the rest of the cd.

A glorious Fifth.  The Tuba Concerto is nice to hear every few years and reminds me why so few exist.  The other works are nice enough.
