The Fall of the Leaf.
English keyboard music on the Rucellai Virginal.
Giulia Nuti, (Rucellai Virginal, ca. 1590)

Anonymus: Prelude
John Dowland: Solus cum sola; The Frog; Piper's Pavan; Can she excuse; Lachrymae Pavan
John Dowland / William Byrd: Piper's Galliard
Martin Peerson: The Primrose.  The fall of the leaf
John Tomkins: John come kiss me now
William Byrd: The Bells
William Tisdall: Alman, Coranto
John Amner: O Lord, in thee is all my trust.
Thomas Campion: Shall I come.
Thomas Morley: Passamezzo Pavan
Giulio Caccini: Amarilli mia bella
James Harding / John Bull: Galliard.

Fast and furious, there is no rest for the wicked, but honestly this kind of playing will not do. Its like Verstappen in a fast car. And the accents and stress she puts on every note, no definitively not for me.

I just googled "Italian style" and this came up

Bold prints, loud hues.  Sometimes, Italians just do it better. Take a break from minimalism, the Milanese way.

She got an Italian harpsichord, Elizabeth I had an Italian harpsichord. I want to suggest, the style is natural given the instrument, and playing English music on such an instrument is a reasonable thing to do.

Vaughan Williams

Symphony No.4

I love his less pastoral works, such as Symphony 4 and 6, more than others.

I want to listen to all the symphonies from 1 to 9 and I like them all so far but the third "Pastoral" a bit less than the others.
I really liked the fourth and you make me curious about the sixth, but first it's the turn of the fifth.

New acquisition, first listen
Johann Jakob Walther.
Scherzi Da Violino Solo.
Illyria Consort, Bojan Cicic.

Curious about that one!  :)  How is it?

Surprised I am by the quality of the music. I have more recordings by this ensemble and the solist Bojan Cicic, and this is a pearl in their crown. Walthers music is inventive, beautiful violin parts, in which Cicic shows and gives time to the melodies, and halts to much emphasis on " Empfindsamkeit". Just enough warmth to make it lucid and well defined. After all, he is next to Biber and Westhoff one of the most important 17th century composers. He is virtuosic in such a way that he was called the "Paganini" of his era. And this is exactly what you hear in the performance. Absolutely recommended.

5 is even more pastoral than the third, and 6 just about as stormy as the 4th.

I am already famliar with Walther's music through this recording , and I second your description:

I haven't checked (yet) how much the programming overlaps, but definitely recommended.  :)

Nice! How is this recording? Kubelik and Brendel look a great combination for Schönberg's Piano Concerto.

Very tasty, Ilaria!

Nice! Are you familiar with the Skalkottas piano concertos, Karl?

I'm not, Tasos, but I feel I ought to be.

Debussy - re-listening to a new acquisition w/ Stephane Deneve shown below - wife out of the house so volume is UP this time!

Martinon is my 'go to' collection for Debussy & Ravel orchestral music - still a superb set despite its age.  BUT back to Deneve - reviews attached for those interested and note that is is a 2-CD set so much more included on 4-discs w/ Martinon.  Dave :)

Debussy, Claude - Orchestral Works w/ Stephane Deneve and the Royal Scottish NO - on two full CDs containing the 'major' works - my usual 'go to' box is Martinon, 8 discs w/ four each devoted to Debussy and Ravel, so much is missing - but the reviews were uniformly excellent-outstanding (see attachment if interested), and was able to purchase on Discogs for about $17 USD (selling on Amazon for twice that amount) - enjoying now.  Dave :)

Great! I've found both the recordings on youtube and after listening, I agree they are exquisitely beautiful perfomances; though my favourite still remains the Pollini/Abbado.

Always preferred the young Brendel to the profundity of the elder one.
