Edward Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor, op.85; Sea Pictures, op.37. Jacqueline du Pré, Janet Baker, John Barbirolli, London Symphony Orchestra

From the box, which arrived today. I don't know anything about Elgar, but I understand it doesn't get much better than this. Wow. What a performance.

Edward Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius, op.38. John Barbirolli, Halle Orchestra & Choir, Ambrosian Singers, Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, soloists

No way am I going to finish all of this right now, but Victorian sacred oratorio sounded like a pretty good idea right now, and with as rare a mood as that is in my life I decided to follow it ;D It sounds nice.

The rare piece that even Barbirolli can't redeem for me, but that's my idiosyncrasy.

That's a wonderful CD with a perfect cover image for 'Winter Daydreams'. I think that Tchaikovsky is the most obvious influence on the early Sibelius.

I greatly admire symphonies 3 and 4 and Chant Funebre, all of which I discovered from that Plasson set.

I played it already for the fourth time, so one could say I like it very much, At this moment the Dowland suite is caressing my ears.

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.1 in D major. John Barbirolli, Hallé Orchestra

Might be the oldest Mahler 1st in my collection, but it sounds nice. According to the liner notes of this boxed set, Barbirolli came to Mahler late and reluctantly, but you'd never guess it to hear any of his recordings, which provide always a sympathetic and very capable execution of the music. I will admit that this performance seems to contain some of the scrappier playing of any of the recordings in the box.
