Vaughan Williams A London Symphony and Symphony No. 8 Vernon Handley and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
I actually prefer Handley's earlier recording of A London Symphony with the LPO.

Sibelius: Symphony No. 7

This performance is a real experience. Karajan milks each passage, each moment, each detail, all of that to maximum greatness. A supreme masterpiece that never fails to move me spiritually.

+1 Great Tapiola as well.

Arguably the greatest of his symphonies - it's deeper than some of the others.

Rubbra's 3rd Symphony

Rubbra's 3rd has always been my favourite in the cycle. Tuneful and immediately accessible.
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

Some light chamber music to finish the day...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

Good to know Danny. It's one that I know the least but it's a characteristically deep, reflective work. My favourites are 4,5,7 and 8.

Handley's was the first RVW set I fetched in, and I still like it.

Great description, I completely agree! The other recordings are marvelous and splendidly performed too.

Castillon: Piano Concerto
Ciccolini; Prêtre: Monte-Carlo

I just did a quick search of the forum, and found this from a couple years ago. I completely agree!

Haven't heard his Piano Quintet, but Castillon's Piano Concerto is a real beauty with the most gorgeous first movement. Perhaps the finale is a bit of a letdown (comparatively), but it's certainly a work worth hearing.

Benjamin Britten: War Requiem, op.66. Benjamin Britten, London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus

Not a work I return to often, but a good one.

Absolutely, Karajan was in his element with Sibelius. I wish he would have recorded the first three symphonies on DG as well.

Have a great week, Karl!

Nielsen: Symphony No. 3

Good performance, mostly regarding brass and timpani. I'm very fond of this cycle overall.
