Finzi: Requiem da camera - I think highly of all the works on this CD, which makes a very nice programme.

It's a beauty of a disc, Jeffrey!

JS Bach: Art of Fugue, Contrapunctus Nos. 1 - 18b [Leonhardt]

I like the way that this section finishes in a flurry of animated sound and also the way in which Leonhardt drives the music.

Hi Fergus,....The recording is a classic and takes you to higher spheres. :)

I think most folk speak very warmly of the CPO recordings as the more established and consistent standard. I am surveying Lindberg primarily, however, with CPO as the support. I don't think I've established a preference at this point. Probably many more listens and much more familiarity needed before I can. I think the CPO issue of 7 has my vote over the BIS though, mostly because the CPO was my first Pettersson purchase and it just sounds right to me. A bit like comfortable slippers. With nails in 🙂

Interesting. I guess each person will form his or her opinion on the various recordings. The cpo cycle is especially difficult to characterize since multiple conductors contributed. But in any case, I probably shouldn't be getting multiple recordings of music I profess to dislike. :)

But maybe I'll get the BIS disc with symphonies 1 and 2 so I can start at the beginning.

To you, as well, Jan!

And of course my best wishes to you Karl, enjoying the wonderful Bach cantata." Las Fürstin..... :)

Diving into the world of Jan Novak, who is slightly less famous than the also pretty obscure Viteslav Novak. Jan's soundworld is a lot like mature Martinu, with a little bit more optimism, maybe. All of these concertos are absolutely delicious. The cello capriccio is the most distinctive and probably the most popular because of its overtly jazzy features (including a drumkit that's, to be honest, kind of underwritten). But I like the piano four-hands piece's Martinutia and the oboe concerto better.

The Philharmonic Dances feel most like a forgotten Martinu piece, and I like them best of all (though the recorded sound and orchestral playing here are also a level up from the other two albums, which might affect my opinion). In addition to the popping rhythms, the dances bounce between major and minor keys in attention-getting ways, have catchy melodic material, and give all the orchestral musicians colorful parts.

Except for the piano concerto, all the works fall into the 18-25 minute range, which is pretty ideal for exploring a new and unfamiliar composer. Especially when he turns out to be this delightful. Someone needs to do a complete Novak series! Oh wait - Toccata is doing one! How convenient.

Love that box!

Karl, talking about box, the Beatles' Revolver remix deluxe editions will be out Oct. 28. I read that the sound quality has been greatly improved and is superb!
