I couldn't resist another listen, even though I've already put it on the shopping list:

It's calm, it's sober but intensely focused and expressive. If this is the direction Beauty Farm is moving, I'm quite happy!

That was the reason why I gave it a listen, Jeffrey. The last minutes are indeed magical.
Yes, and much as I love the music of VW I think that it was a big mistake to excise that section in 1936.

Before work
Finzi: Requiem da Camera (again)
Holst: Psalm 86
This is a fine CD (all three main works)

Good choice of words, well put.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Organ Works of the North German Baroque.
Volume III.
Complete Organ Works of the following composers.
Andreas Kneller, Christian Geist, Johann Adam Reincken.
Friedhelm Flamme, Organ.
Instrument: Johann Matthias Hagelstein, 1735-40, St. George Church, Gartow.
Pitch: c. 5/8 ton above normal.
Temperament: Neidhardt I.

Kneller is a fine composer, although there is not much left of his music, only 4 pieces, but those are pretty impressive. Flamme is projecting the Stylus Phantasticus in great detail, aided by this excellent organ. Geist is a decent composer, and only three works survived in score, but it is doubtful if he is the composer or not. Still very enjoyable music. Reincken is by far the best composer represented on this disc. Bach admired the man greatly, and had nothing but praise for him. His written down output is very small indeed, he was more known for his improvisation, and that of course has not come to us in a score, unfortunately. Only 5 pieces, among them the beautiful "An Wasserflussen Babylon". A hymn of 327 bars it delights at every turn and corner. There is doubt that the Fugue in g minor is of his hand, but it is an impressive piece nevertheless.

JCF Fischer: Journal Du Printemps [Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra]

Orchestral Suites Nos. 1, 3, 6 & 8

The music is pleasant but played in a very old school, very non HIP manner. I would like to hear more energy infused into the presentations. Having said that, it was still fine and I enjoyed it.

Damn, I love this set!

Definitely "purchase of the year" material for me. Listening to 43 (Mercury) now. But it hardly matters. The quality level is uniformly excellent. Apparently they were recorded 40-50 years ago. Admittedly, I stumble onto new (to me) Haydn symphony sets and get excited every year or two. But this set has such buoyancy and joie de vivre I find it irresistible. Sound is excellent, btw.
It's all good...

That is a fine organ. Any thoughts about this performance Que?

I've had this 2CD set for years, and quite satisfied with the perfomances. And well recorded.

The larger part of the 2nd disc is played on the Metzler organ of the St. Clara in Basel BTW.

Thank you! I was not aware of this recording, that happens. I have several recordings of the Metzler organs, and find them to be good instruments, and have impressed me with the richness of details.

Ruth Gipps.
Orchestral Works, volume II.
Symphony No. 3.
Oboe Concerto.
Chanticleer.
Death on a pale Horse.
Juliana Koch, Oboe.
BBC Philharmonic, Rumon Gamba.

This is a wonderful release, long awaited by many, and finally arrived. It fulfils every hunkering for her music, and can be bought instantly by those that admire the music, and the intellect behind it. Terrific performances by all involved, and the usual good sound spectrum by Chandos.

Somehow that rings a bell with me, and made me grin from ear to ear.

We are not alone, Harry! In other news, your beard is almost identical to the one that I grew during lockdown, except with fewer youthful brown bits, and maybe slightly shorter. I had to cut it somewhat once the world opened up again to prevent small children asking me for presents, birds from attempting to nest in it, and my adult children from constantly rolling their eyes unhealthily into the backs of their heads. Not Gandalf. As soon as my daughter is married early next year (as I am both walking her in and then marrying them and don't want to frighten unsuspecting bridesmaids), I will be growing it back.

Even more bells were ringing. I am already asked by a few shops to play Father Christmas, but I declined that obviously. My few brown reddish hairs will soon be gone, although they put up a brave fight. My beard was almost twice as long a few years ago, but that prevented me to step on a bike, even though I tied it up properly it became unstuck, with all the consequences. I am vehemently against birds nesting in my beard so this I prevented with all means at my disposal. My friends and family are used to this beard and call me frequently "The Monk" who walks in silence, so be it, I am content with that, less hassle and more silence for me to listen to music.
I enjoyed your story immensely. Maybe we should call the members of the Legue for Beards society and compare notes

We almost look alike, even the beard, brother! You have more hair on top and you are younger.
