Lisztianwagner

Gustav Holst
Seven Part-Songs

Patricia Rozario (soprano)
Joyful Company of Singers (chorus)
Richard Hickox & City of London Sinfonia

Very evocative, mystical composition, I think Holst had certainly an incredible ability to compose for voice.
"You cannot expect the Form before the Idea, for they will come into being together." - Arnold Schönberg

Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet No.15 in A minor, op.132. Guarneri Quartet

Good to get back to a late quartet. Been spending most of my time with middle period Beethoven lately, but the late stuff is just as amazing, of course. I just love the Guarneri cycle. I have another, newer cycle, Belcea Quartet on Alpha, which is also very good. But I come back to the Guarneri a lot more these days.

Ligeti - Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet

This is, well, joyful . Certainly not what I was expecting Ligeti to be like . This exploration could be interesting (I only have "Atmospheres" in a Bernstein box and I think I listened to "Lux Aeterna" once before).

Ligeti - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (1990-93)

Good heavens! Did you decide to go for all three boxes at once! (If so, wise decision!)
Or are you just streaming? (If so, also a wise decision).

The cover image of a storm over the sea is by Constable. It certainly fits the very tempestuous reading of the Sixth.

Schreker: Das Spielwerk und die Prinzessin

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

I agree - this is a terrific CD in all respects.

Morning listening:

A gorgeous recording that focuses on the Southern Netherlands and its artistic ties with Italy, and the music at the Brussels court in the early 1600's.

Having finished my Verdi marathon, which started back in July I've moved on to a short Villa-Lobos journey with these three discs.

I prefer the versions of the famous Bachianas Brasileiras no5 featuring Bidu Sayão and Victoria De Los Angeles, but the Tilson Thomas is a useful disc, coupling Bachianas Briasileiras nos 4,5, 7 & 9 with Choros no 10.

Discovery of Brazil is colourful film music. The orchestra cope quite well, but the chorus sounds distinctly undernourished.

Forest of the Amazon is an adaptation of music written for the film Green Mansions and features Bidu Sayão and the Symphony of the Air and Chorus conducted by the composer.

The WTC on an organ? An oxymoron? Actually, it's (so far) delightful.

It's all good...
