That's a fabulous Symphony and very moving in the tragic circumstances of Schulhoff's life.

Now playing here:
Arnold Bax Symphony No.3

That's a fine version of the Violin Concerto.  If you are happy to stream YouTube performances there are a couple of excellent live performances from (possibly) unexpected players;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSUWMaCnN3M
(Hugh Bean/Vernon Handley/BBC NOW)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqWpzbGLCU4&t=5s
(Chantal Juillet/Vernon Handley/Ulster Orch - noticeably quicker in the opening!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnHDS4oG-E4
(Andre Gertler/Malcolm Sargent)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UdtjzTuSYM&t=28s
(John McLaughlin Williams/Pro Arte Chamber Orch)

All 4 are genuinely fine performances and impressive in quite different ways

A fine performance!
It was the first time I listened to Bliss' music, how awe inspiring, I liked the Colour Symphony very much!

Blimey I hear traffic noise in the recording, most noticeable in the second suite, "Reves d'Enfant" ??? :o
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

The new erato

There are good reasons to avoid a too analytic setup in many discs. I have experienced many times that som discs sound better in lower fi.

+1 for Nuhro, which reminded me of Fauré and Ligeti at times.

Thanks!

Pjotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Suites for Orchestra, No. 3 & 4.
New Philharmonia Orchestra, Antal Dorati.

I could not resist to play both Suites after the first two. That's easy, because Tchaikovsky is by far my favourite composer, and secondly because I found these interpretations revelatory in every respect. Sound wise it's a dream too, traffic noise and all, The remastering has been well done, considering that the recordings took place in 1966. Detailed and pristine dynamics and yes cars doing vroemmmmmm,. It was a secondhand set and I also wanted to check if they were undamaged, even though the surfaces are clean. But its okay, and so I have finally Suites in a performance I like, like very much.

And to add a titbit, the recordings Dorati made in England, the Complete Haydn Symphonies, were also afflicted with a lot of traffic noise, even worse, especially the first 7 or eight discs.

I seem to remember having read that one London studio was afflicted with rumble from the London Metro.

Yes I just stumble over an article referring to this noise as coming from the London Metro, the article funny enough did not mention which studio. It is as it is, despite the noise on Tchaikovsky and Haydn for that matter it will stay in my collection, because its better to have this, as conductors that hum out of tune, which often happens too. :)

Carl Nielsen.
Symphonies.
No.1 in G minor & No. 6.
National SO of Ireland, Adrian Leaper.

Not quite sure what to make of the interpretations of both Symphonies, well played but a bit faceless perhaps. The recordings are okay, but there is something missing, something which Chung, on BIS delivers, and if my memory serves me right, Kuchar and Bostock too.
Am I right? Or must I get into Leapers mind frame and settle for his style? Confusing!

Revisiting one of Schuch's masterful concept discs.  The Liszt playing makes me want to hear him in the sonata, the Annees, and the complete S173.

It's a fine disc. No 5 was just reissued on Alto:
