That's one of the most underrated symphonies that I know. I wrote into Gramophone after they published a snotty review of it and they featured my letter 'In defence of Maximilian Steinberg' in which I said that he deserves to be known as more than the son-in-law of Rimsky-Korsakov and the teacher of Shostakovich. I'm pleased to see someone else listening to it as well. I also like the 2nd Symphony on DGG with its moving, redemptive 'tolling bell' conclusion with the use of the orchestral piano, which I suspect influenced Shostakovich in his 1st Symphony. Gramophone published this photo with my letter (from left to right, Stravinsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, R-K's daughter/Mrs Steinberg, Maximilian Steinberg):

Some early morning music here - Rubbra Symphony No.3

Interesting how R-K and also his daughter aren't looking at the camera--with R-K actually turned away from it (sitting position).

And some of the sets and costumes are now right here in Canberra. Being able to see them was magical.

EDIT: Nijinsky's costume. https://digital.nga.gov.au/archive/exhibition/balletsrusses/default.cfm%3firn=106561&bioartistirn=11792&mnuid=3&galid=11&viewid=2.html
Thanks for that link!  Great to see the actual costumes and also the drawings and photos.  :)

Yesterday I missed the livestream of this concert, but luckily there's still the video on the youtube channel of the Arnold Schönberg Center; quite modern program with works for violin and piano:

Claude Debussy/Violin Sonata in G minor
Arnold Schönberg/Phantasy for Violin with Piano Accompaniment
Sergei Prokofiev/Five Melodies
Leoš Janáček/Violin Sonata

Paul Wranitzky.
Symphonies.
Opus 50/37/51.
NDR Radiophilharmonie, Rolf Gupta.

A marvelous recording of these fine works by Wranitzky who is totally ignored. More reason to be joyful about this second instalment CPO released. Very good sound. The NDR orchestra makes this into a feast.
Thanks for this post, Harry! I will pull this up on streaming now and give it a listen. Love the Czech/Bohemian classical era symphonists. And I enjoyed this recent release of Wranitzky's colorful "characteristic" symphonies depicting war, peace, and the weather:

Hi Harry - another Wranitzky fan here - own about a dozen CDs (some w/ his brother Anton), mostly the Symphonies but also several chamber discs and the Violin/Cello Concertos (also a brother split) - now listening to Paul's Oboe works on a Spotify playlist - a new recording from earlier this year but hard to find a physical copy at a decent price - for those interested, check out the Wranitzky Project - Dave :)

Superb program! Will listen soon.

Perfectly agreed, it was indeed very thrilling! I hadn't listened to the performers before, but they played very well.

Thanks again, Harry. This disc was tremendous fun! The music is energetic, lively, and outgoing. Many of the themes reminded me of Rossini or Haydn, and I was very surprised by the slow movement of Op. 37, which steals the piccolo licks from Papageno in The Magic Flute. Like you say, the NDR orchestra is very obviously enjoying every minute. A joy of a disc.
